Four years ago, in August 2019, Zooey Deschanel, of “New Girl” and “Elf” fame, met “HGTV” star Jonathan Scott.
In fact, their first meeting was a siblings’ date, if you will. And a rather public one, at that. In fact, you probably remember it if you’re a fan of James Corden’s Carpool Karaoke segments.
Let’s take a trip down memory lane shall we:
One month later, in an interview, although playing koy, Jonathan admitted he was “seeing someone.” Eventually, it would be confirmed that someone was none other than Zooey Deschanel.
Now, after four years of dating, Jonathan decided he no longer wanted Zooey to be his girlfriend. So they upgraded themselves to fiancès!
On August 14, Zooey and Jonathan took to Instagram to share the big news. Jonathan popped the big question and Zooey said yes.
Alongside a photo of the lovely couple smiling as Zooey showed off her amazingly unique engagement ring, they wrote, “Forever starts now!” How incredible is that?
While the couple has been dating for quite some time, the beginning stages of their relationship was quite a whirlwind, Jonathan explained in a recent interview. As he is quoted saying, “We started dating, moved in together, and before the end of the year I had kids.”
And although he loves being a father figure in Zooey’s children’s lives, he admitted in the same interview that it hadn’t been the easiest transition for the kids. “Fatherhood is recognizing that there are all different kinds of dads in the world, and I don’t think anyone is better than the other. It’s really been the joy of my life to dive into these stepdad duties headfirst. I’ve hit the ground running and love every minute of it,” Jonathan said.
Nonetheless, he didn’t want to push anything to make the kids feel uncomfortable. Now, they call him “my Jonathan.” “Eventually they came up with ‘my Jonathan.’ So, whenever they tell a story they say, ‘There’s daddy, there’s mommy, and he’s my Jonathan.'”
Now that Jonathan and Zooey are set to wed, it’s unclear if the name they choose for him will change. Although, Jonathan admits he hoped to be called “Papa.”
