While the Smith family has always seemed very open and excepting of each other and the good and the bad, Willow Smith has since revealed that hasn’t always been the case. During the newest episode of Red Table Talk, Willow Smith and Alec Baldwin’s eldest daughter, Ireland Baldwin, opened up about growing up in the public eye.

As a result of having her whole life scrutinized by the public eye, Willow admitted that had resulted in a lot of anxiety at an early age. However, while Willow and Jada seemingly have an open, honest, and understanding relationship now, Willow admits that wasn’t always the case.

According to the now 21-year-old, Jada wasn’t immediately understanding of the anxiety Willow was dealing with as a child. “It was rough,” Willow shared. “I feel like when I was growing up, she didn’t understand my anxiety. Because she, growing up, had seen her friends die—she had been through so much stuff that my issues, to her, kind of felt like…[smaller].”

“And that was very frustrating for me as a child,” the singer continued. “Because I was like, ‘How can you not see my internal and emotional struggle?'”

It was only recently that Willow and Jada finally reconciled that upsetting time in her life. “Recently, we had a talk, and she was like, ‘I never knew that I actually experienced anxiety.’ And she was pushing it down for so many years like she had no idea. So, I had to forgive her a little bit for being like, ‘Yeah, yeah, yeah…I get it, but it’s really not that bad.'”

Ireland Baldwin admitted she could relate to Jada in a way. She, too, before seeking treatment attempted to ignore her own anxiety. “I’ve been through so much before I really got help,” Ireland explained.

“I was in a really abusive relationship, and I did go to a treatment center…and for so long, I didn’t wanna call it [that] just like I didn’t wanna call my anxiety—anxiety. I need to overcome everything that I had been through and rid myself of all the pain I locked away in an unreachable place.”

The Smith family is currently going through another difficult time. Will Smith was last seen in India as part of his healing journey after he slapped Chris Rock during the Oscars.

Jada revealed that the family will discuss the moment on Red Table Talk once they are ready.
