We Saw a Lot of the Royal Family During the Queen’s Jubilee, But Who Are They?

The UK threw a once-in-a-generation celebration for Queen Elizabeth II‘s Platinum Jubilee. The 96-year-old queen is the first British monarch in history to reach a Platinum Jubilee, which marks 70 years on the throne. Many members of the royal family were in attendance at the celebration leaving many to wonder just who those fancy family members actually are. The queen’s Platinum Jubilee celebration had everything from Trooping the Color to a National Service of Thanksgiving, a star-studded concert led by Diana Ross, thousands of lunches and street parties across the country, and a final appearance by the queen herself.

If you’ve been following the festivities, you’ve seen a lot of the Queen’s royal family members and you might want to know who’s who among them. We decided to take a deep dive into the royal family tree so that you can get a better idea of the family that was in attendance for the celebration and just who of those members are part of the royal line of succession. Get to know the royal family, their titles, and the movers and shakers who will be the next generations’ royals. Let’s go!

Queen Elizabeth II

“When it comes to how to mark seventy years as your Queen, there is no guidebook to follow. It really is a first. But I have been humbled and deeply touched that so many people have taken to the streets to celebrate my Platinum Jubilee,” Elizabeth wrote as a thank you to participants in her Jubilee. “While I may not have attended every event in person, my heart has been with you all; and I remain committed to serving you to the best of my ability, supported by my family.”

But, what about those royal family members who “supported” the Queen?

Charles, Prince of Wales

The future King of England, Charles, Prince of Wales, was in attendance for his mother’s Platinum Jubilee. He attended with his wife, Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall. It might be inappropriate to discuss succession after such a joyous celebration of the Queen’s life and reign, but Prince Charles is next in line to the throne.

Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall

After a divorce and the untimely death of Princess Diana, Prince Charles married the Duchess of Cornwall, Camilla Parker Bowles. The couple was wed in April of 2005. Charles and Camilla’s love story spans decades and pre-dates his marriage to Diana Spencer. The couple will rise to the highest rank of the English monarchy following Queen Elizabeth II’s reign.

William, Duke of Cambridge

Son of Charles and Diana, William, Duke of Cambridge is next in line of succession for the throne after his father. The Duke performs official duties and engagements on behalf of the Queen. He holds patronage with over 30 charitable and military organizations, including the Tusk Trust, Centrepoint, and London’s Air Ambulance Charity.

Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge

Catherine “Kate”, Duchess of Cambridge is set up to become Queen consort should her husband ascend the throne. Kate and Prince William married in 2011. The couple met in 2001 at the University of St. Andrew’s in Scotland. The pair have three children, the eldest of which is firmly in the line of succession.

George, Prince of Cambridge

Next up in the royal family’s line of succession is Prince George. Due to his rank in the line of succession, and the subsequent expectation that he will one day become the British monarch, his birth was widely celebrated across the Commonwealth realms. He was born July 22, 2013.

Charlotte, Princess of Cambridge

Princess Charlotte of Cambridge is the second child and only daughter of Prince William, Duke of Cambridge, and Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge. She is fourth in the line of succession to the British throne. She was born May 2, 2015. Her parents prefer to call her by her nicknames “Lottie” and “Mignonette.”

Louis, Prince of Cambridge

Prince Louis of Cambridge is a shining member of the British royal family. He is the third and youngest child, as well as the second son of Prince William, Duke of Cambridge, and Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge. He is fifth in the line of succession to the British throne. During his great-grandmother’s Platinum Jubilee celebration weekend, Louis and his siblings made their debut in the Trooping the Colour carriage procession. Louis was born April 23, 2018.

Harry, Duke of Sussex

Prince William, Duke of Cambridge’s younger brother, Harry Duke of Sussex is the younger son of Charles, Prince of Wales, and Diana, Princess of Wales, and is sixth in the line of succession to the British throne. Harry launched the Invictus Games in 2014 and remains the patron of its foundation. He also gives patronage to several other organizations, including the HALO Trust and Walking With The Wounded. Harry caused waves when he married Meghan Markle, Duchess of Sussex in 2018. The couple resides in California today but were in attendance at the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee.

Meghan, Duchess of Sussex

Meghan Markle retired from acting upon her marriage to Prince Harry, Duke of Sussex in 2018 and became known as the Duchess of Sussex. In January 2020, the pair stepped down as senior members of the royal family and later settled in her native California. The couple has two children, Archie and Lilibet.

Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor is the son of Prince Harry, Duke of Sussex and Meghan, Duchess of Sussex. He is the eighth great-grandchild of Queen Elizabeth II and is seventh in the line of succession to the British throne. He was born May 6, 2019 in London.

Lilibet Diana Mountbatten-Windsor is the daughter of Prince Harry, Duke of Sussex and Meghan, Duchess of Sussex. She is the eleventh great-grandchild of Queen Elizabeth II and is eighth in the line of succession to the British throne. She was born June 4, 2021, in California.

Anne, Princess Royal

Anne, Princess Royal is a member of the British royal family. She is the second child and only daughter of Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh. Anne is 17th in the line of succession to the British throne and has been Princess Royal since 1987. In 1976, she became the first member of the British royal family to have competed in the Olympic Games. She has two children with her previous husband, Mark Phillips: Peter Phillips and Zara Tindall.

Peter Phillips

Peter Phillips is a British businessman and the son of Anne, Princess Royal, and Captain Mark Phillips. He is the eldest grandchild of Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, and is 18th in the line of succession to the British throne. He was married to Canadian Autumn Kelly in 2008 and together they have two daughters, Savannah, born in 2010, and Isla, born in 2012. The couple separated in 2021.

Zara Tindall

Zara Anne Elizabeth Tindall is a British equestrian and Olympian, the daughter of Anne, Princess Royal, and Captain Mark Phillips. She is the eldest granddaughter of her mother’s parents Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, and is 21st in the line of succession to the British throne. She married Mike Tindall in 2011. The couple has three children: Mia Grace Tindall, Lucas Tindall, and Lena Elizabeth Tindall.

Andrew, Duke of York

Prince Andrew, Duke of York is a member of the British royal family. The third child and second son of Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh. He is ninth in the line of succession to the British throne. Following an intense, negative reaction to his connection to Jeffrey Epstein, he permanently resigned from public roles in May 2020 and his royal patronages were rescinded in 2022. Royal watchers claim that Prince Andrew is the Queen’s closest child.

Princess Beatrice of York

Prince Andrew’s eldest daughter, Princess Beatrice of York was in attendance at the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee. Her mother is Sarah, Duchess of York but her parents separated in 1996, Born fifth in line of succession to the British throne, she is now tenth. She married Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi in 2020 and the pair have a child named Sienna. Beatrice has a younger sister, Princess Eugenie.

Sienna Elizabeth Mapelli Mozzi was born to Princess Beatrice on September 18, 2021. At birth, the little girl was 11th in the line of succession. Sienna’s parents have yet to release a public image of their daughter but we did find her footprints for you!

Princess Eugenie of York

Princess Eugenie of York is the youngest daughter of Prince Andrew and Sarah, Duchess of York.  At birth, she was 6th in the line of succession to the British throne and is now 12th. She married Jack Brooksbank in 2018 and they have a son named August.

August Philip

Eugenie gave birth to a son, August Philip Hawke Brooksbank, on 9 February 2021. At birth, he was eleventh in line to the throne. He was one of the youngest members of the royal family in attendance for the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee.

Prince Edward, Earl of Sussex

Prince Edward, Earl of Sussex is the youngest child of Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh. Edward is 14th in the line of succession to the British throne. Edward was made Earl of Wessex prior to marrying Sophie Rhys-Jones in 1999. The Earl and Countess of Wessex have two children: Lady Louise Windsor and James, Viscount Severn. Edward was given the additional title of Earl of Forfar in 2019. If you watched any of the Jubilee proceedings, you know that the Earl was heavily featured.

Sophie Rhys-Jones is the Countess of Wessex. Sophie is a member of the British royal family. She is married to Prince Edward, Earl of Wessex, the youngest son of Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh. She is the patron of over 70 charities and organizations, including Childline and the London College of Fashion.

Lady Louise and James, Viscount Severn

The Earl and Countess of Wessex have two children, Lady Louise Windsor and James, Viscount Severn. Lady Louise is a granddaughter of Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, and is 16th in the line of succession to the British throne. James is the couple’s younger child and he is 15th in the line of succession.

If you saw season one of The Crown, the show finds the Queen and the late Prince Philip with a camera that they used to document their travels. The Queen has long been interested in home photography and home movies.

World Cup

In the above photo, the Queen Awards the World Cup to Bobby Moore. “55 years ago I was fortunate to present the World Cup to Bobby Moore and saw what it meant to the players, management, and support staff to reach and win the final of a major international football tournament,” she wrote of the experience.

With the King

We find Queen Elizabeth young with her father, King George VI, and Prince Philip watching a young Prince Charles sitting on a statue at Balmoral in 1951.

Coronation

The coronation of Elizabeth II took place on 2 June 1953 at Westminster Abbey in London. Elizabeth acceded to the throne at the age of 25 upon the death of her father on 6 February 1952. This is why her birthday is celebrated in June, even though she was born in April.

Bright Colors

You might have noticed that the Queen wears bright colors for public events. You’re not imagining it, the bigger the event, the brighter the color. The reason is that the Queen draws huge crowds and bright colors are more easily seen from a distance.

Marriage

The engagement of Lieutenant Philip Mountbatten to Princess Elizabeth was announced in July 1947 and the marriage took place in Westminster Abbey on 20 November 1947.
