A mom writes in looking for advice on whether she should get her daughter’s nails done.
A Community Member asks:
“What age do you ladies think is appropriate for a young girl to get their nails done? My daughter is 7 (almost 8 ) years old and loves to put on the glue on little girl nails, which fall off the same day. I was considering taking her to the nail salon for her 8th birthday and getting her a set, but still, feel like it could be too young. I wouldn’t let her get them long, or too crazy, but a simple, short, calm style, would still make her happy. What age did you mama’s let your girls get their first set at?“

Advice Summary
The community really gave some great advice to this mom on if and when to get her daughter’s nails done. You can read some of the suggestions below.
“You can paint them yourself anytime. The appropriate time for her to go to a salon and get a manicure would be special occasions starting about 13 then if she wants manicures more frequently, then the answer is when she has a job and can afford it. This is a luxury, not a necessity.”
“I would suggest gel nail polish, acrylic/fake nails will damage her nails badly at such a young age and there’s the risk of her breaking a nail and that hurts even for adults lol.”
“I would just get her nails done at the salon but just a manicure with her natural nails. The experience should be more then enough she’s to young for that though big responsibility trying to hurt herself.”
“Oh gosh no. Just the upkeep alone. I always pass on what my mom used to tell me, “when you can pay for them then you can have them.” I take my 9-year-old in for mani-pedis but actually doing tips and filling them… nope.“
“I am a nail tech and I’ve done my girls starting in 8th grade. So around 13. They need to be able to keep them clean. Way too many germs under the nails if not taken care of properly. 8 is just too young. I have a 7-year-old stepdaughter and mani-Pedi are ok and recommended for now. My daughters are 20 and 12.”
“I didn’t get my first set until I was 18. I used my own money. And I’m thankful I waited so long. A lot of girls my age have ruined their nails while mine grow ok with long periods of time between each set. I don’t get them a lot as I see it as a thing for special occasions.”
“Take her for a manicure and to have her nails painted. It’s fun to do stuff like that with your mom and learn how to care for your nails. As her nails grow she can get gel paints and use her natural nails.“
Final Thoughts
I feel like it is a personal preference, honestly. But what I do know is that many salons won’t do children that young. They will paint their nails but they won’t use acrylics on her.
What a special time, though, it would be to take her and have that girls’ day. They can do such cute art for them that young. I am sure she will love getting her nails done. My daughter has begged to get her nails done and I have waited until now, when she is about to be 13 this month. I can’t wait to surprise her with it.
I hope you can take her and get something special done. These are the kinds of memories that last a lifetime.
