Ukrainian Doctor Unable to Save Girl, 6, After Russian Shelling, Says: ‘Show This to Putin’

Ukrainian doctors, nurses, medics, and first responders are desperately trying to save civilians injured as Russia invades the country. With many photos and videos pouring out of Ukraine, one incident has caught the world’s attention. A 6-year-old girl was mortally wounded following the Russian shelling of a civilian area.

Video footage shows an ambulance arriving at a hospital in Mauripol on Sunday with the girl in blood-soaked unicorn pajamas. Her father, who accompanied her, was also injured.

Even after arriving at the hospital, medics inside the ambulance continued to administer CPR on the girl as personnel from the hospital urged to have the girl placed on a gurney and brought inside.

“Take her out! Take her out! We can make it!” a hospital worker shouted, according to the Associated Press that captured the video.

The girl was flanked by doctors and nurses who fought back tears as they tried to revive her. One gave her an injection. Another tried to revive her with a defibrillator. A nurse openly wept. A doctor wearing blue scrubs turned to the AP’s camera and angrily said, “Show this to Putin. The eyes of this child, and crying doctors.”

Unfortunately, the little girl did not survive.

Ukraine’s Ministry of Internal Affairs said that as of Sunday evening, 352 civilians had been killed, including 14 children, CBS News reports. The government agency said 116 children were among 1,684 wounded civilians.

As the fighting continues across Ukraine, Ukrainian and Russian delegates arrived Monday for the first direct negotiations between the two countries since Russia launched its invasion six days earlier. While the talks brought preliminary hope for an end to the war, Ukraine’s president, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, made it clear before the discussion began that he wasn’t hopeful for any major breakthrough, CBS News also reported.

Global condemnation and crippling sanctions have left the Kremlin isolated in the wake of last week’s invasion, confronting a tanking economy and tenacious defense from Ukrainian forces, NBC News reports. U.S. officials fear Russian President Vladimir Putin, frustrated by his military’s ineptitude, could see a greater escalation of violence as his only option.

As the civilian casualties mount, we are haunted by the image of the doctor in Mauripol as he closed the girl’s eyes, and her body was left alone in the emergency room as her blood pooled beneath her on the floor.
