While a strong majority of fraternal twin sisters share the same birthday together, that won’t be the case for newborns Annie Jo Scott and Effie Rose Scott. Believe it or not, these two adorable bundles of joy were born on different days and in different years – despite technically being fraternal twin sisters.
That’s the type of magic the new year can create. According to the mother, Kali Scott, Annie Jo was born at 11:55 pm on December 31st and Effie Rose was born at 12:01 am on January 1st– not just different days, but different years. That’s going to make for some fun New Year’s celebrations in the future.
In an interview with Good Morning America, Kali highlighted the fact that her twin daughters already have a splash of individuality and uniqueness that will help define who they become. “I love the unique aspect that they get to go forward with a little bit of individualism right out of the gates,” she said to GMA.
We often hear of unique, funny, and ironic birth stories on New Year’s, but this one is a little rarer than most. In fact, it’s something Kali Scott and her husband, Cliff Scott, had joked about in the days leading up to the birth – they were scheduled to have a C-section on January 11, but that got moved up.
By December 29th, it was a real possibility that they had New Year’s babies. “We had joked at that point, once we realized that we weren’t going to leave the hospital without babies, that wouldn’t it be funny. We had a couple of friends who said the same thing, and then it ended up happening that way,” said Kali.
Now that it’s a reality and they have their unique birth story to tell for the rest of their lives, Kali Scott can’t help but acknowledge how exciting her family’s New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day celebrations will be moving forward. What’s already a joyous time for friends and family will only be that much more exciting.
“I had been thinking, so traditional of one birthday, but now it’s two totally different birthdays. One will get to celebrate New Year’s Eve going out and gets to celebrate New Year’s Day and the new year coming in,” she said, adding that they’re ‘going to have to start celebrating New Year’s a little differently now.’
Has This Ever Happened to Twin Sisters or Brothers?
While this is an extremely rare occurrence and the only one we know of that happened at the start of 2023, it certainly isn’t the first time we’ve seen twins born on different days and in different years. In fact, it happened to a set of fraternal twins – Aylin and Alfredo Trujillo – at the beginning of 2022 (last year).
Fatima Madrigal gave birth to a baby boy named Alfredo Antonio Trujillo at 11:45 pm on December 31, 2021, before giving birth to his little sister named Aylin Yolanda Trujillo at 12:00 am on January 1, 2022. The baby boy weighed 6 pounds and 1 ounce, while the baby girl weighed 5 pounds and 14 ounces.
“This was definitely one of the most memorable deliveries of my career. It was an absolute pleasure to help these little ones arrive here safely in 2021 and 2022. What an amazing way to start the New Year,” said Ana Abril Arias at Natividad Medical Group, who was excited to share this experience with them.

The hospital that delivered the babies noted how rare of an event this was – that being twins with different birthdays – estimating the odds to be 1 in 2 million. With that said, twin births are becoming more and more common as some reports suggest more than 1.6 million twins are being born globally every single year.
