Tori Spelling is one of the 45 million people in the United States who wear contact lenses in an effort to see more clearly on a daily basis. More specifically, she wears daily contact lenses, which are only meant to be worn for 8-16 hours of the day before being removed – hence, the name ‘daily contact lenses.’

Tori Spelling Reveals Why She’s Left Wearing an Eye Patch

Unfortunately, like many Americans, she doesn’t always follow her eye doctor’s directions and often leaves her contacts in for longer than one day. And like many Americans – again, unfortunately – she recently suffered a complication, in the form of a corneal ulcer in her left eye, as a result of her misuse.

Still, she didn’t let that stop her from supporting her friend/hairstylist, Laura Rugetti, at her Hidden Crown Hair Line launch party. Spelling walked the runway with a pink bedazzled eye patch to cover her healing eye.

And, yes, the eye patch was designed by Rugetti, proving that best friends always stick together.

On Monday, Tori Spelling – who had her breakout role in Hollywood with Beverly Hills, 90210 – hosted her 9021OMG Podcast with Jennie Garth and was still wearing an eye patch. Naturally, she got asked about the eye patch and explained what happened and why she’ll be listening to her eye doctor from now on.

“It’s my fault. I did this to myself. So I have contacts, but I wear daily ones. And, at the end of the day, kids, whatever, I can make all the excuses I want. I don’t take them out. I sleep in them. It’s not healthy, and you’re supposed to change them,” she said – adding that she now has a corneal ulcer as a result.

She was then asked how long she had gone without taking them out. Surprisingly and shockingly – if you’re an eye doctor, don’t read this part – she once went 20 days without taking her daily contacts out. 20 DAYS!

She added that she was transparent with her eye doctor and has a treatment plan in the works.

Her eye doctor said that, while teenagers and college kids can get away with it, people in their 40s can’t – adding that she’s lucky she got away with it. She was told to wear the eye patch for 7-10 days and once it heals, she’ll transition to 30-day contact lenses to hopefully avoid any future eye and vision complications.

Tori Spelling Can’t Drive, But That’s Not the Worst of It

While her eye heals, Tori Spelling isn’t allowed to drive – but that’s not the worst of it. According to the 90210 star, the most difficult part of wearing an eye patch is trying to parent her five children – who she shares with her husband Dean McDermott. Together, the couple has three sons and two daughters.

“Forget work, but to ‘mom’ with one eye, not OK,” she explained on the podcast. “Moms have to literally hear and see everything happening at one time, and I cannot” – a sentiment any mother can relate to. Luckily, she has a solution.

“A child has to take me around literally. I have a designated seeing-eye child.”

Her recent eye health complication is a steady reminder to anyone who wears contact lenses – and there are a lot of us out there – to follow directions and make sure they’re caring for their contacts properly. If they’re left in too long, it can result in corneal ulcers, hypoxia, inflammation, or contact lens intolerance.

For those that wear daily contact lenses, only wear them during the day and remove them at night – they’re only designed to be worn for 8-16 hours out of the day. If you wear disposable contact lenses, make sure you dispose of them after wearing them and never wear them a second time (or more).
