Tom Brady is celebrating ‘16 years of joy’ with his eldest son, John Edward Thomas Moynahan (also known as Jack). He turned 16 years old on Tuesday (August 22) and it’s reminding everyone just how old we are – it seems like just yesterday that his birth came as a surprise to everyone, including his parents!

“16 years of joy with the (sweetest, kindest, most loving etc etc) son, brother, friend and teammate any parent could ever hope for. You have changed our lives since the day you were born and everyday since has been such a blessing for everyone who knows you and is lucky to have you in their life,” Brady wrote.

Of course, turning 16 years old can only mean one thing… Jack is ready to start learning how to drive – and his father is very much aware! “Now it’s time for the next step… the learners permit….hahahaha ….I’m gonna make sure I’m off the road,” Brady joked on Instagram – sharing a few photos of Jack.

Jack Moynahan is the only child of Tom Brady and his ex-girlfriend, Bridget Moynahan. The former couple announced their split in December 2006, but she announced her pregnancy two months later – and Brady was the father. On August 22, 2007, Moynahan gave birth to the man we know as Jack.

Brady and Moynahan started dating in 2004 – they were first spotted together in February 2004 and made their official red carpet debut as a couple in July at the I, Robot (remember that movie?) premiere in Los Angeles. Tom Brady later opened up about their relationship in an episode of 60 Minutes in June 2005.

They dated for nearly three years, but things came crashing to a halt in December 2006. “[They] amicably ended their three-year relationship several weeks ago. We ask for your respect and consideration of their privacy. No further comments will be made,” a representative for Bridget Moynahan said at the time.

The surprise pregnancy came in February 2007 and the birth came six months later. Now fast forward 16 years and here we are – their son is learning how to drive and Brady is living the retired life after 23 years in the NFL. Luckily, Brady and Moynahan remained cordial and have given Jack the best life possible.

Jack Moynahan Won’t be the Next Tom Brady on the Football Field

Growing up, it was obvious that Jack Moynahan was a natural-born athlete – after all, that’s what you would expect from someone who has Tom Brady as a father. The father-son duo enjoy a little competition with one another, which has led to some entertaining golf outings – often documented on social media.

Aside from golf, Jack has taken a heavy interest in soccer and swimming – he’s a big fan of the Olympics – throughout his life. It wasn’t until high school that he grew interested in playing football and it didn’t take long for him to prove his talent. Unfortunately, it appears that was just a phase – and that phase has left.

“And to be honest, whatever he chooses, I’ll be very happy. But he loves lacrosse…basketball’s probably his favorite sport, but he’s a very good student,” Tom Brady said in a recent interview with PEOPLE. It seems the older he gets, the more he realizes just how good of an athlete he is – he can play anything!

With high school graduation right around the corner, it’s unclear if he has plans to play college sports – but if he did, it seems like basketball or lacrosse might be his avenue. Either way, we hope Jack has a very special 16th birthday with his father, mother, and siblings – who he has grown extremely close to.
