You might think finding a more religiously conservative family than the Duggars would be impossible, but TLC just might have done it. A new reality TV show is on its way to the channel featuring the Plath family. The Plaths have nine children, which is ten fewer kids than the Duggars.
Don’t let that number fool you into thinking the Plaths are any less conservative. They follow a similar, fundamentalist lifestyle as the Counting On stars and reside in southern Georgia. To offer some perspective, these people think that drinking a cup of coffee is sinful.

If you thought the Duggar kids were sheltered, the Plath kids take it another level. The Plath children aren’t allowed to drink soda, watch TV, or date outside of their hair color. One of the kids is a huge football fan but has never heard of Tom Brady. (At least they were spared deflategate.)
This family looks like they think vanilla ice cream tastes spicy.
The Duggar family is famously conservative.
You might recall that the girls aren’t allowed to wear pants until they mary. There is no “front-hugging,” kissing, etc before the wedding day. Women aren’t allowed to leave the house without their husbands or without their permission. And, they aren’t allowed to watch the very thing they are famous for, TV.
And in case you forgot that this family is religious, every single Instagram post is accompanied by a caption to remind you. Usually, you’ll find a wholesome bible verse or reference to the maker.
This beautiful photo is captioned, in part, “Our goal in life is not to figure out how to live only on the ‘joy’ side of the tracks, avoiding all sorrow, but to continually look to Christ who has promised to never leave us or forsake us. Blessed be the name of the Lord! We look forward to seeing Grandma Mary and baby Annabell again in Heaven someday!”
How is TLC going to top this? Why is TLC doing this?
Rumor has it that patriarch, Jim Bob Duggar might be the reason why TLC is phasing the Duggar family out.
Derick Dillard, who married Jill (Duggar) Dillard, has expressed concern about how Jim Bob manages the family and their lucrative contracts with TLC. Both Derick and Jill left Counting On a few seasons ago and perhaps that’s given them the ability to see the bigger picture.
Derick, who’s studying to become a lawyer, says that the children on the show are not part of the contract and that they’re considered volunteers. He also claims that he and his wife never received any compensation for medical bills they accrued from their son’s birth.
This is all hearsay and we don’t know what’s actually true. But, there’s no denying that a rift exists between Jill and the rest of the family.
Perhaps TLC is just building a larger, fundamentalist ecosystem for its fans.
Rumors are rumors and the Duggar family is extremely popular. Honestly, we think that the Duggars will be on TLC for a while. The addition of the Plath family to TLC’s lineup might just mean more opportunities for two similar, ultra-conservative families to interact. Perhaps one of the Duggar kids will start “courting” a Plath kid and then a spinoff show will be born! Who knows?
Either way, we’re excited to see what the Plaths get up to. If they’re anything like the Duggars, they will make great TV.
