So, whether you’re expecting a bundle of joy yourself or simply curious about the current trends, let’s dive into The Bump’s top baby names of 2023.
Most Popular Baby Names for Girls
Evelyn
Evelyn is a unisex name that is currently far more prevalent among baby girls than boys. The name made the top 10 in 2022, ranking ninth. So, it’s a good bet that this name will continue to be popular in 2023. The name is found in English, French, and German naming traditions and can be “desired” or “island.”
River
River is a delightful, gender-neutral baby name that is going to about as many girls as boys these days. It’s on the rise for both. It has yet to crack the top 100, meaning that River has some serious climbing today to be at the top.
Aria
Aria is a name of Italian origin that means “melody” or “air.” Aria has enjoyed the most popularity ever in recent years. In other languages, this name is considered a male name, meaning “lion” in Hebrew. The name ranked in the top 25 in 2022, so expect this one to stay near the top next year.
Quinn
Quinn is a unisex name of Irish origin that means “descendent of Conn.” Quinn performs better for girls than boys, ranking in the top 75 last year for little ladies. A theme you likely have picked up on is the popularity of unisex names, especially for girls. The gender-neutral trend has been growing for years now and we expect to see even more used in 2023.
Blake
Blake has been falling for baby boys and climbing for girls recently. However, it just cracked the top 200 in 2022. That makes it a long shot to be at the very top this year.
Amaya
Amaya first landed in the top 1000 most popular names for girls in 1999 and has remained relatively stable around the 200-spot each year since then. Amaya is a darling, multicultural name found in Spanish, Basque, and Japanese naming traditions. Thus it can mean “mother city,” “the end,” and “rain at night.”
Aurora
Aurora has grown enormously over the past 30 years and is more popular today than ever. The appellation will likely land in the top 25 in 2023 if trends hold. This name is also popular across Europe right now. Aurora names the goddess and personification of the sun in Roman Mythology. This name’s root means “dawn.”
Mila
Mila is the trendiest girl name to start with an M. The name shot up the charts like a rocket beginning in 2007, from virtual obscurity to one of the most popular names for girls today. Last year, it was nineteenth. Mila comes from a Slavic root that means “dear” and “gracious.”
Mia
Mia became a top-ten option in 2010. Last year, it ranked eighth. It’s one of the most commonly given baby names for girls in the US. Mia is an Italian word meaning “mine.” It is also a Scandinavian form of Mary, meaning “bitter.”
Maeve
Now for one of our favorites, Maeve. Maeve comes from Irish and means “she who intoxicates.” Today, it is one of the most popular baby names for girls hailing from Ireland. It’s been on the rise since 1997, and if current trends hold, it will land firmly in the top 100 in 2023.
Aaliyah
One of the most popular baby names starting with A, Aaliyah is here to stay. It should remain in the top 100 in 2023. Last year, it was 68. Aaliyah comes from an Arabic root that means “heaven,” “noble,” and “exalted.” Nothing to complain about there!
Amara
Amara is one of the most multicultural baby names on the list. It is found in Italian, Greek, Igbo, Sanskrit, and Arabic. Thus, meanings include “immortal,” “bitter,” “grace,” “peace,” and “tribe.” Amara is a mildly popular name today that has plateaued at around the 150 spot. This name will still be put to good use in 2023 but we don’t see it cracking the top 100.
Nova
Nova was more popular than ever in 2022, hitting the 32 mark. Nova comes from Latin and means “new.” It will likely improve its standing in 2023. We love it!
Rowan
Rowan is a unisex name that can be found in both Irish and Scottish naming traditions. It can refer to the “rowan tree” or mean “little redhead.” Rowan ranked 96 for girls and 276 for boys in 2022. While this name will continue to climb for boys in 2023, we don’t see it landing in the top 25.

Eliana
According to The Bump, Eliana is their most popular baby name for girls. The name has been climbing since 1994 and was 41st last year. The Hebrew root of this baby name means “my God has answered.”
Most Popular Names for Boys
Milo

Elias has been in the top 1000 in the US since records began in 1880. But it has enjoyed its most prevalent years recently. It performed better than ever before in 2022, landing at 43. Though technically unisex, Elias has never been a contender for baby girls. The name’s Hebrew root means “Yahweh is God.”
Alex
Alex has fallen off the charts for baby girls, and it is slipping for boys. That isn’t to say that it’s not popular. It’s been in the top 300 since 1880. Ari

Remi
Remi is a gender-neutral baby name that has only recently been used as a baby name for boys. It ranks 742nd for them and 188th for girls. This name has a long way to go before becoming one of the US’s most popular names. But it is on a steady climb. Remi is a name of French origin that means “oarsman.”
Zion
Some parents used Zion for baby girls between 2006 and 2017, but that has mostly ceased. Zion has cemented itself as a baby name for boys. But you get to make the rules! Luca
Having only been on the top 1000 chart for 22 years, Luca has made huge strides. The name ranked 28 last year, and it is set to improve on that in 2023. Luca can be considered an Italian form of Luke, meaning “man from Lucania” or “light.”
