Why Was Suzanne Somers Laid to Rest in Timberland Boots? Her Husband Alan Hamel Gives Us the Reason

We all have a daily morning routine that gives us a sense of stability and normality, but no one’s routine compares to what Alan Hamel and Suzanne Somers did for the 50 years they were together. Since both of their residences – one in Malibu and one in Palm Springs – were next to mountains, they would hike!

But wait, it gets better. When they got to the top of the mountain, they were greeted by a creek with a large, flat, and inviting rock sitting in the middle of it. That rock became their morning sanctuary – it’s where they would eat their lunch, it’s where they would take a quick nap, and it’s where they bonded.

“By the time we got there, which was about a two-hour hike, the rock had been warmed by the morning sun. We would have our lunch on the rock and then take a one-hour nap on the rock and then hike back down and go to work,” Alan Hamel said of the morning routine in an exclusive interview with PEOPLE.

In that interview with PEOPLE, Alan Hamel revealed that his wife, Suzanne Somers, was wearing a pair of Timberland boots when she was laid to rest – something that might surprise or confuse a lot of people, unless you know about their morning routine. Those Timberland boots were a symbol of their union.

“Suzanne never really had boots designed for hiking on the rocks, so I ordered the Timberland boots,” he said of the reason why he bought his wife Timberland boots. “[I] made my gift personal by drawing on them in a few words that represented our life to some degree and made them very personal to Suzanne.”

While he admits it would’ve made more sense dress her in a pair of Manolo Blahnik shoes – according to Hamel, she had ‘every Manolo Blahnik ever made’ – he ultimately decided that it would be too predictable and not personal enough if she wore Manolo Blahniks ‘for her final trip.’ So he went with Timberlands.

“Every time she put on the Timberlands, she said, ‘I am wearing you, and my boots will keep me safe,’” Hamel added. Somers was surrounded by her husband, son (Bruce Somers Jr.), and other family members when she passed away on October 15 – she had been battling breast cancer for 20+ years.

Suzanne Somers Died a Day Before Her 77th Birthday

Suzanne Somers was an icon to anyone she came across. Whether you were lucky enough to meet her or lucky enough to be inspired by her, she touched the hearts of everyone and was a vocal advocate for women’s health and empowerment. She passed away two months ago, but her legacy lives on forever.

Her death came just one day before her 77th birthday, so her family decided to give her one last birthday celebration – while she wasn’t physically there to celebrate, she was most definitely there in spirit. In an interview with PEOPLE at the time, Hamel revealed that the family had a toast and enjoyed some cake.

“We actually toasted, last night we had I think 12 of us here and we all toasted Suzanne,” Hamel said just a few days after his wife passed away. “I’m sure we’ll do something today. I’m positive we’ll do something today. I don’t know what it’ll be, but it’ll involve a lot of cake because Suzanne was crazy for cake.”

Alan Hamel also revealed that, while Suzanne Somers loved all types of cake, she had a real sweet spot for red velvet cake – adding that it would make her day if she could get her hands on a slice of red velvet cake.
