Influencer who married herself a year ago says she’s now divorcing herself

One year ago, Brazilian influencer Suellen Carey made the decision to marry herself. It’s a practice known today as “sologamy.”

In an Instagram post shared on Sept. 21, 2023, Carey shared photos of herself in a London church wearing a traditional wedding dress. “Yes, public, I am sologamous,” she explained in the caption, at the time.

“Over time I discovered and understood what I wanted. Today I value and love myself, I married myself here in London,” she continued, revealing that the celebration of her marriage to herself is “important because I learned to prioritize my well-being and mental health.”

As a result, she vowed to “commitment to caring for and valuing my self-love.”

Carey called her wedding “one of the happiest days of my life” and hoped her journey to self-love was one that inspired other people.

However, the happiness she felt nearly a year ago is now gone.

In an Aug. 30 interview with The Mirror, Carey revealed she is divorcing herself, calling it her “only option.” “I realized that self-analysis and reflection is essential,” she told The Mirror.

“It’s crucial to know when to end a cycle. Even commitment to oneself can have its challenges, such as dealing with the expectation of being perfect for yourself all the time.”

Carey explained that she even went to therapy to fix the issues in her marriage, but the loneliness got to be too much for her.

“I realized I was putting a lot of pressure on myself and that sometimes left me exhausted,” she said. “I understood that even in a marriage with ourselves, it’s important to accept our imperfections.”

Despite her divorce, Carey doesn’t regret her decision to marry herself. “I realized that my sologamous marriage was a process of healing and self-discovery,” she continued.

“But I also understood that personal growth can lead us in different directions. I’ve decided that now is the time to open my heart to new possibilities, including the chance to find a partner.”
