Stevie Nicks has released a statement following the news that her former bandmate, Christine McVie, died Wednesday. Nicks remembers the songwriter as her “best friend in her whole world since the first day of 1975.”
In a lengthy statement shared on Instagram captioned “this is heartbreaking,” Nicks shared her shock and sadness.
‘I Didn’t Even Know She Was Ill Until Late Saturday Night,’ Stevie Nicks Said of Christine McVie.
“I wanted to be in London, I wanted to get to London, but we were told to wait,” the singer wrote about wanting to be with McVie in London where she passed away.
Nicks explained in the post that she had one song stuck in her head ever since learning of McVie’s illness, the Haim sister’s “Hallelujah.”
“I thought I might possibly get to sing it to her,” Nicks wrote in the handwritten letter uploaded to Instagram, “and so I’m singing it to her now.” Nicks then goes on to quote the lyrics of the song, beginning with the line, “I had a best friend but she has come to pass/One I wish I could see now.”
“See you on the other side, my love. Don’t forget me – Always, Stevie,” Nicks ends her message.
As Mama’s Uncut previously reported, McVie, a singer, songwriter, and keyboardist, was the biggest hitmaker for one of the 1970s and 80s most prominent musical acts, Fleetwood Mac. Her death was announced on Facebook by her family Wednesday.
“On behalf of Christine McVie’s family, it is with a heavy heart we are informing you of Christine’s death,” the shared statement says.
“She passed away peacefully at hospital this morning, Wednesday, November 30th 2022, following a short illness,” the family also shared. “She was in the company of her family. We kindly ask that you respect the family’s privacy at this extremely painful time, and we would like everyone to keep Christine in their hearts and remember the life of an incredible human being, and revered musician who was loved universally. RIP Christine McVie.”
