Stevie Nicks joined Billy Joel for two surprise duets as part of the pair’s “Two Icons, One Night” tour that launched at Los Angeles’s SoFi Stadium on Friday night. The songs had 70,000 members in the audience cheering their hearts out.
But it was Nicks’ tribute to a rock legend that died recently that resonated with audience members and caused the Gold Dust Woman’s name to trend on Twitter.
Stevie Nicks Brought the House Down.
First, Nicks performed a dynamite set with many of her hits like “Stand Back,” “Edge of Seventeen,” and “If Anyone Falls” as well as Fleetwood Mac masterpieces like “Dreams,” “Gypsy,” “Rhiannon,” and “Sara.” She also performed a cover of Buffalo Springfield’s “For What It’s Worth.”
A few songs in, Nicks sang “Stop Draggin’ My Heart Around,” the Bella Donna single she said her late friend Tom Petty “gifted” her in 1981. Then, the audience went bananas when Joel joined her onstage to perform the Petty part of the song. Later in the night, Nicks returned the favor by joining him on his tune, “And So It Goes.”
All-in-all, it was a solid night for Nicks, who left the crowd wanting more. Then, in an encore performance of Fleetwood Mac’s most touching song, “Landslide,” Nicks dedicated the ballad to her once band member, the late Christine McVie, who died last year.
As she sang, vintage images were shown on the stadium’s large screens. They pictured Nicks and McVie through the years and provided visual punctuation that had many audience members feeling the feels.
As the song ended, Nicks broke into tears as the emotional weight of the song and of her loss bore down. She bowed her head against her microphone stand, and there was a brief pause before she spoke.
“I have to imagine she’s still here. It’s all I can do,” she said through tears, choked up. Her band members surrounded her in support to take their final bow.
