Actress Sophie Turner says its been a ‘struggle’ since divorce

On Sept. 11, actress Sophie Turner and singer Joe Jonas finalized their divorce.

While the details of their divorce agreement remain private, the Associated Press reported that various documents revealed “moderated negotiations led to an agreement on splitting assets, spousal support and custody of their two daughters, 4-year-old Willa and 2-year-old Delphine.”

Now in an interview with The Sunday Times, Turner is opening up about life as a single mom and how it’s helped her with her latest role as Joan Hannington, a single mom and notorious jewel thief.

“If I hadn’t been a mother, I don’t know if I would have been able to bring the same energy that I did into it,” she told The Times.

“It’s such a struggle being a single mother. Joan doesn’t go about it in the best way … but it is amazing to see her really fighting for her daughter,” Turner said. “It’s also really important for kids to see just how hard parents work for them.”

However, Turner said the role made her realize that societies views of single motherhood haven’t changed much since the 1980s.

“There’s so much shame that comes with motherhood,” she told The Sunday Times. “You go to work, you’re shamed. If you don’t go to work, you’re shamed.”

Turner added that playing Joan as she was going through her divorce “gave me a lot of strength.”

“Joan changed me quite a lot,” Turner said. “From utter desperation comes so much will and ambition. The series came around at a time in my life where I had to be ambitious and I had to have such strong will and fight against the forces. She gave me a lot of strength.”

In October 2023, one month after Jonas filed for divorce in September, the former pair shared a rare joint statement regarding their divorce after coming to a temporary custody agreement.

“After a productive and successful mediation, we have agreed that the children will spend time equally in loving homes in both the U.S. and the UK. We look forward to being great co-parents,” Jonas and Turner wrote in the statement.

While going through her divorce, Turner told British Vogue that her good friend, Taylor Swift, lent her one of her homes.

“I’ve never been more grateful to anyone than I am for her because she took my children and me, and provided us with a home and a safe space,” Turner said of Swift.

“She really has a heart of gold.”
