The Maywood Police Department is currently searching for former NFL player Sergio Brown after he and his 73-year-old mother, Myrtle Brown, went missing on Saturday (September 16). Family members grew concerned when they couldn’t get ahold of Sergio or Myrtle, which they say is uncharacteristic of the two.
In an interview with WGNTV, Sheila Simmons – the sister of Myrtle Brown and aunt of Sergio Brown – received a phone call at around 3:00 a.m. on Saturday morning informing her that her sister and nephew had gone missing. She couldn’t get ahold of them, so she went to their Maywood home to look for them.
No one was home when she got there, but something about the house didn’t sit right with her – something seemed off. With the police getting involved, they started to search the creek behind the home, but nothing came of it. It wasn’t until they returned to the creek later that day that they found Myrtle’s body.
“We’re going to find out what happened because it’s not normal for my sister to not answer her phone, not to respond to text messages. People have been reaching out to her since Friday,” she said. “I got the call this morning saying that she’s missing, so immediately I came out here and find out my sister is dead.”
Myrtle Brown, who had just celebrated her 73rd birthday on September 8, was found unresponsive by the creek behind her home. Her body was taken to the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office, where they determined she suffered multiple injuries due to an assault. Her manner of death was ruled a homicide.
While Myrtle’s body was found, they still have yet to see or hear from her 35-year-old son, Sergio Brown – who is still considered missing at this point. It’s unclear if Sergio is a victim or a suspect in the mysterious case, but he’s certainly someone they would love to find and talk to so they can piece the puzzle together.
The Maywood Police Department is asking for help from the community. Anyone who has any information that might help them find Sergio Brown is being urged to contact Maywood Police Investigations at 708-368-4131, or Maywood PD’s anonymous tip line at 708-450-1787 – your help is highly appreciated.
