Sarah Jessica Parker and Matthew Broderick have been one of Hollywood’s favorite ‘it’ couples for the past three decades. They started dating in 1992 and got married five years later on May 19, 1997 – the celebrity couple celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary just six weeks ago and are as happy as ever.
On Thursday (June 29), Jessica Parker sat down with Howard Stern on The Howard Stern Show and talked about her relationship with Broderick and how they continue to grow closer every single day – though she explains that it hasn’t always been that way. In fact, she used to try to avoid her now-husband.
When they first met in November 1991, they were already with other partners – but they knew something was there. Out of respect for their partners, they decided to stay away from each other until they broke up with them. “We understood that we had to do right by the other people and break up officially,” she said.
“We had our first official date on March 8 of 1992 and we’ve been together ever since,” she added – emphasizing that they have ‘never spent a night apart since then’ with the exception of work and family issues that have come up in the past. Other than that, they’ve been inseparable since that first date.
As far as what drew Sarah Jessica Parker to Matthew Broderick, she says she ‘really liked his person’ and described him as smart and funny. She was a big fan of his choice of friends, enjoyed that he lived in NYC, and loved the things that were most important to him. Of course, there was also an attraction there.
“Really smart and really talented and he was, I thought, so beautiful and handsome and charming,” she said on The Howard Stern Show. “I love being home in New York,” Parker declared. “I wanted to build a life here and he was born and raised in the West Village, literally — he’s never lived north of 11th Street.”
The couple tied the knot in 1997 after five years of dating and started building a family together in 2002. Their son, James Broderick, was born on October 28, 2002 and was named after Matthew’s father. They also have twin daughters, Marion and Tabitha Broderick, who were born 7 years later on June 22, 2009.
Sarah Jessica Parker Shares Her Secret to a Long Marriage
This isn’t the first time Sarah Jessica Parker gushed over her lover during an interview – and it certainly won’t be the last. In 2018, she spoke with PEOPLE and discussed some of the secrets to having a long and happy marriage. So, what’s the secret? Embrace the changes you and your partner go through.
“Your needs are shifting. You and your partner are going to change. It seems so silly, but I think you’re very lucky if you like the person. I still just really like him. I’m sure I annoy him and he annoys me, but I literally learn about him every day. I’m like, ‘You’re doing what? You’re reading what?’” she told PEOPLE.
As far as how or when she knew Matthew Broderick was the one for her, she can’t pinpoint any one instance that sticks out. “I never thought about a wedding dress. Never. Had not one daydream about it,” she said. “At one point I just simply remember thinking, ‘God, I really hope he asks me to marry him.’”
