Ree Drummond and her hubby, Ladd Drummond, are still trying to get used to their new lives as empty nesters now that their youngest child, Todd Drummond, is in college. It’s the type of lifestyle that comes with a lot of benefits, but things can get lonely rather quickly and they’ve already gotten a taste of that.
On Saturday (Oct. 7), Ree and Ladd decided to drive the eight hours to the University of South Dakota to watch their youngest son play a collegiate game. He might be a freshman QB and might not receive any playing time right now, but his parents missed him so much that they couldn’t wait any longer to see him.
Ree took to Instagram to share a photo of her and her son – who was in full uniform. “In this photo from last Saturday, I am displaying the classic goofy, dreamy, I-get-to-see-my-kid-for-two-whole-hours empty nest sad-but-happy mom smile. Let me know if you get it. (I love you, Todd.), she wrote in the caption.

If you were to ask Ree Drummond, the 16 hours of travel were worth the two hours of face time with her son – something she and her husband don’t get enough of these days. She goes on to express how important it is for parents and grandparents to drive to school functions – no matter how far away it is.
In a separate post on Instagram, Ree posted a photo of Todd receiving a big hug from his father, Ladd. It’s these types of moments that Ree and Ladd cherish that much more now that they’ve entered the empty nest stage of their lives. Even if it takes a whole day of travel to make it happen, it’ll happen.
Todd Drummond was a four-sport athlete in high school – football, wrestling, basketball, and track and field. He’s the winningest quarterback in Pawhuska history and threw for a total of 7,500 yards and 85 touchdowns for his school before committing to play for the University of South Dakota as a freshman.
The South Dakota Coyotes are off to a great start to the 2023 season – sitting at 5-1-0 after six games – but Drummond hasn’t seen any playing time yet. In fact, I wouldn’t expect to see him out there at all this season with the way the Coyotes’ sophomore quarterback, Aidan Bouman, is performing right now.
Ree Drummond Drove to See Her Other Son Play Football Last Year
In April 2022, Ree Drummond was missing her son, Bryce Drummond, a little extra hard one weekend. So, she decided to make the drive up to the University of North Texas, where her son was playing football, and supported her son on the final day of spring football – another trip that was well worth it.
Of course, it was a much easier trip than her one to the University of South Dakota. Instead of it taking 16 hours (eight hours there and back), her trip to North Texas was roughly half of that (4.5 hours there and back or 9 hours total). She took to Instagram and shared a photo of her alongside her linebacker son.
“I drove to Texas to see Bryce today! Then I drove home. Captivating story, I know. ???? But I sure loved every minute. I love you, Bryce!!” she wrote in the caption. It was Bryce’s final year at North Texas before transferring to Oklahoma State this past offseason – which is even closer to his parents (about 1.5 hours).
