Prior to her death, Mary Kay Letourneau, who is most notoriously known for raping a 12-year-old student before marrying him years later, reportedly wrote a handful of letters. In an exclusive interview with People, a source close to the former teacher revealed the contents of those letters.

As Mamas Uncut previously reported, Letourneau passed away in 2020 following a battle with stage 4 cancer. She spent seven years in prison for being a convicted child rapist.

According to the “legal source,” it was because of her past mistakes that she decided to write the letters which were intended for specific people. It’s believed she wrote upwards of 30 letters before passing away.

As the source revealed these letters were her way of righting her wrongs. “She had a lot of wrongs to right,” the source said, who was also a recipient of one of the letters.

“She had a lot of things to say. She made a lot of mistakes in her 58 years — not just the big one everyone knows about — and she wanted everyone to know that she was sorry for the mistakes she made. She told me she wrote a lot of letters. She was closing in on 30 of them.”

The source continued to tell People that Mary Kay Letourneau would want others to learn from her mistakes. “She knew, especially near the end, that the ends don’t justify the means, and that even her wonderful daughters and long marriage didn’t excuse how she got there. And she hoped that no one else would ever make the mistakes that she made.”

Prior to her passing, although they were separated, Letourneau and her husband, Vili Fualaau, were still married. Fualaau was the young boy she was found guilting of assaulting.

The couple shares two daughters together, Georgia and Audrey. The source admitted that he didn’t know if Letourneau wrote letters to either of them. However, the source did know that Letourneau loved Fualaau “until the end.”

“I don’t know if he received a note, but I do know that she made things right with him as best as she could.” Letourneau and Fualaau welcomed their two daughters into the world before he was 15 years old.

While speaking to Dr. Oz following his wife’s death, Fualaau talked about their last moments together. “She said, ‘I am the most important person to her and everything is going to be okay.’”

Fualaau said he and some of their children were there when Mary Kay Letourneau took her last breath. “It was devastating because the reality is you’re not going to see the person who has been there for you the most.”
