The Queen of England and Buckingham Palace almost seem synonymous. However, Queen Elizabeth hasn’t lived at her arguably most famous palace in quite some time.

And according to People, she likely will never live there again. As a royal insider reports, over the last two years, during the global pandemic, Queen Elizabeth has lived at Windsor Castle.

And as The Sunday Times reports, it’s allegedly been determined that is where she will remain for the rest of her reign. Windsor Castle is located about 20 miles outside of London.
While it’s unclear why Queen Elizabeth won’t return to Buckingham Palace, The Sunday Times reports that it is because the Queen is “more comfortable” staying in the home where she and Prince Philip lived until his April 2021 passing. However, after taking off a few weeks while she recovered from COVID-19, the Queen has since resumed her usual engagements and official duties.
Just today, March 7, Queen Elizabeth conducted her first in-person meeting with Canadian Prime minister Justin Trudeau since contracting COVID in February. The Queen and Trudeau met with each other in the Oak Room at Windsor Castle.
While Buckingham Palace has not commented on the report that Queen Elizabeth will not return to Buckingham Palace, People reports that it has been stressed that the Palace will remain “the central base of the monarchy.”
This decision to stay reportedly stay at Windsor Castle comes after Queen Elizabeth released a statement saying that she wishes for her son’s wife, Camilla, to be known as the Queen Consort when Prince Charles becomes King following her death. This is a change from the announcement she made after Camilla and Charles first got married, where she wished for Camilla to be referred to as the Princess Concert.
“When, in the fullness of time, my son Charles becomes King, I know you will give him and his wife Camilla the same support that you have given me; and it is my sincere wish that, when that time comes, Camilla will be known as Queen Consort as she continues her own loyal service,” the Queen said, in part.
The exact reason for the change in the title remains unclear. However, now that she is living in Windsor Castle, her other two sons, Prince Andrew and Prince Edward are much closer to her.
