Alec Baldwin was seen visibly upset and crying after a prop gun he was using while shooting a new movie in New Mexico misfired. A lot of the details regarding this tragic accident are not yet known.
However, this grave mistake has left one woman dead and another injured. According to reports by the Sante Fe New Mexican, the woman who passed away has been identified as the director of photography for the feature film Rust.
Halyna Hutchins was just 42 years old when she died at the University of New Mexico Hospital in Albuquerque. Additionally, the movie’s director Joel Souza, 48, was also injured during the deadly accident. He is currently being treated for his injuries at the same hospital. An update on his current condition has not been revealed.
As multiple reports have been suggesting, Hollywood icon Alec Baldwin was the one holding the prop gun when it fired. He was one of the stars of Rust, as well as one of the producers.
According to sheriff’s office spokesman Juan Ríos, Alec Baldwin has been very helpful during the initial investigation process. He has been at the department to offer a statement already.
“We’re treating this as we would any other investigation,” Ríos said. However, he added that deputies were still trying to determine whether what happened was an accident.
“According to investigators it appears that the scene being filmed involved the use of a prop firearm when it was discharged,” the statement said, according to CNN. “Detectives are investigating how and what type of projectile was discharged.”
As CNN reported, the tragedy “happened at approximately 1:50 p.m. local time, investigators said.” Rust is reportedly a Western film set in the 1880s that stars Baldwin, Travis Fimmel, and Jensen Ackles. Production has now been postponed.

Fran Drescher, president of the Screen Actors Guild-American Federation of Television and Radio Artists, and the union’s National Executive Director Duncan Crabtree-Ireland issued a statement following the accident.
“We are devastated by this tragic news. Our hearts go out to the family of Director of Photography Halyna Hutchins who has passed away and to Director Joel Souza who is injured and hospitalized. This is still an active investigation and we do not yet have all the facts. We will continue to work with production, the other unions, and the authorities to investigate this incident and to understand how to prevent such a thing from happening again.”
This is not the first time a prop gun has injured people on set.
