What would you do if your child came out as gay? Prince William had the perfect response when a reporter asked him the question recently, saying he would “fully support” his children if they were gay. He said he would stand by “whatever decisions” his children made, but noted that “it does worry me from a parent point of view.”
Prince William recently visited The Albert Trust (AKT), an LGBTQ youth charity in London to discuss some of the challenges LGBTQ youth experience. “I wish we lived in a world where it’s really normal and cool, but particularly for my family, and the position that we are in, that’s the bit I am nervous about,” he shared with the group. He noted that there can be many “barriers, hateful words, persecution and discrimination” which is troubling to consider.

As reported by the BBC, the fact that Prince William publically supported LGBTQ rights and their fight for equality is a turning point for the Royal Family. In addition to answering the hypothetical question about his children, Prince William also condemned the recent attack on Melania Gaymonat and her partner, Chris, on a London bus, saying “I was really appalled.”
Prince William was praised for his comments by AKT. Chief Executive Tim Sigsworth, who said his comments would make a “massive difference” and sent “a message that we need to support, and we need to empower LGBT people.”
