Should We Just Skip Preschool Due to COVID-19 and the Ongoing Pandemic?

A mom writes in asking for advice about preschool. “Should we skip preschool due to COVID-19? I have a 4-year-old that I was supposed to sign up for preschool this year. With all this COVID-19 stuff happening, is it a better idea to wait and skip preschool? I have a 1-year-old at home and I’m supposed to give birth in November as well.”

Advice Summary

Should We Just Skip Preschool Due to COVID-19 and the Ongoing Pandemic?

The community offered this mom in need a lot of great advice. Read some of their responses below.

“I have a 4-year-old who’s been in daycare/preschool the whole time. I’m due in September and my 4-year-old will continue to go during my maternity leave. I believe kids need exposure to germs, also in the competitive world we live in the sooner we can teach them and get them into a school setting the better.”

“Just finished paperwork and paid our 4-year-old’s dues to start in August. I feel kids need to have the social interaction, be exposed to germs, and learn independence rather than living in fear of getting sick. I’m looking at COVID like we do the flu. I’m just really making sure that we are washing hands, covering our mouths when we sneeze, cough, yawn, keeping our hands to ourselves. Normal stuff, just being extra stern on it.”

“I think it depends where you live. Where I live, my kids are back in daycare and summer camps, but we have 0 cases in our area and the max we had was 6 since March. location matters”

“I’m a preschool teacher and not a single child or family member or teacher at our center has had COVID and we are a huge facility. No masks, just hand washing, being careful about touching and cleaning has led to this. We haven’t even closed through this.”

“You do what you think is right. Don’t let anyone make you feel bad for whichever route you plan to do. Learning, whether it’s removed, in-person, or a mixture of both won’t be easy.”

“My kids aren’t going to be apart of a science experiment to see how bad this can spread. I’m keeping them home. We will struggle so badly but will be worth it.”

“I would hold off. My daughter is supposed to be starting kindergarten next month but we decided to just homeschool her. It’s gonna be a rough road but I can’t risk something happening to her or her little brother who has asthma.”

“I’m keeping my baby home from preschool this year. And my other 2 from elementary school. I’m due in September and just not willing to risk it. We can do all that stuff at home.”

“I think right now the priority is to be safe and healthy, basically stay alive, and you can only do that staying at home.”
