Birth is already a terrifying experience, even for those who describe it as magical. Now, imagine giving birth in the middle of a war.

Many Ukrainian mothers right now are having to endure both of those obstacles as Russia’s invasion of Ukraine continues. And one woman, who was inside the Mariupol maternity hospital on March 9 when Russia bombed it, has managed to welcome her child into the world just one day later.
Pregnant Ukrainian Woman Seen Fleeing Maternity Hospital Following Russian Attack Gives Birth
You may not know it, but if you saw photos of the aftermath of the attack on the hospital, then you’ve likely already seen the mother we are talking about. As the New York Post reports, this is Mariana Vishergirskaya.
On March 10, inside a makeshift hospital, Vishergirskaya gave birth to a baby girl. Vishergirskaya and her husband, who was also present for the birth named their little girl, Veronica.
As you can see in the photograph below, the new mom was giving birth to her daughter wearing the same polka dot shirt she was wearing at the time of Wednesday’s blast.
According to the Post, local journalist Olga Tokariuk talked with the woman’s family, who told her, “They are ok, but it’s very cold in Mariupol and the bombing doesn’t stop.” Sadly, Russia’s embassy has falsely tried to persuade people via Twitter that the information about the bombing was not real.
Twitter has since removed the tweets made by the Embassy after a spokesman for Prime Minister Boris Johnson labeled the tweets as “disinformation.”
As Mamas Uncut previously reported, during the early morning hours of March 9, reports stated that Russian forces bombed a maternity hospital in Mariupol after agreeing to a 12-hour ceasefire that would allow refugees to evacuate from the towns and cities that have been seeing the worst of the war.
Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky called the attack on the hospital a “direct strike” and an “atrocity,” in a statement. He then repeated his pleas to NATO calling for the military alliance to declare a no-fly zone over Ukraine.
“How much longer will the world be an accomplice ignoring terror?” Zelensky wrote. “Close the sky right now! Stop the killings! You have power but you seem to be losing humanity.”
