Shay Mitchell recently opened up about her miscarriage, which occurred in 2018. Mitchell spoke candidly about her experience miscarrying at 14 weeks gestation on her new pregnancy series, Almost Ready, now on YouTube. Mitchell and her boyfriend, Matte Babel, are now expecting a baby girl, which the couple excitedly announced to fans earlier this month.
Mitchell explained that she chose to wait to publically share the news of her second pregnancy until much later as a result of the miscarriage. “It didn’t go as I had hoped for and it was extremely difficult.”
She continued, “Everyone waits for the right time to make the announcement and for me, it wasn’t until I couldn’t hide it anymore and was tired of wearing over-sized sweatshirts.”
Approximately 10-15% of known pregnancies end in miscarriage and Mitchell has been open about her experience. “The first time that I was pregnant last year, Matte and I hadn’t been planning. It happened and we were really excited about it,” she shared. “When it happened, I was just completely blindsided by it.”
Mitchell was in tears sharing her story, saying, “I still have those photos on my phone and I still have all the doctor visits … and it’s weird because I haven’t looked at them, obviously,” she said. “But it’s not like I forgot about that happening.”
“I know other women and other friends of mine who’ve gone through a way harder journey,” Mitchell continued. “It’s just really tough because you feel broken, as a woman, and that’s not a great feeling.”
While Mitchell revealed she “still feels for the one I lost,” she and Babel have been happily celebrating their current pregnancy. For example, check out their unique gender reveal video, which features a fight between a blue and pink Power Rangers.
We wish Shay Mitchell, Matte Babel, and their baby-to-be all the best! And we appreciate Mitchell’s candidness in talking about a difficult topic like miscarriage.
