A couple in Switzerland became new parents and decided to save a bundle with their bundle of joy by naming their daughter after a WiFi company. Swiss internet provider, Twifi has been running the promotion which promises free WiFi for 18 years if new parents name their child Twifia or Twifius.
A couple from Graubünden decided the offer was too good to pass on, so that gave their newborn daughter the middle name Twifia to see if Twifi would stick to its word.
The father of a child named after an internet provider initially thought the free WiFi promotion was a joke.
Though the couple wanted to remain anonymous, they did speak to Blick, a local newspaper about their experience. At first, the offer seemed so outlandish the father thought it was a bad joke.
“The longer I thought about it, the more unique the name became for me,” he said as he warmed to the strange name. “There are much worse names. And the more often we say ‘Twifia,’ the heartier the name sounds!”
After convincing himself that it might be a good idea, he told his wife and somehow got her on board with the plan. After all, the money the couple would save over the years would not just benefit them but also their daughter. They calculated that they spent around $66/month on WiFi. The couple decided that they would use those savings as a nest egg for their daughter when she turned 18-years old.
“She can use it to take a driving test or buy a car,” they explained. They also hope the name might seem “pretty cool” to her by then. We imagine she won’t like the name but she’ll appreciate a check.
You might be thinking, ‘well, what happens if the company goes out of business before the baby girl turns 18?’ Twifi boss, Philippe Fotsch told Blick that he’ll keep his word to the family.
“I’ll be personally liable for it,” he said. “It’s a matter of honor.”

A matter of honor… Okay! The offer, apparently, still stands for other parents as long as they provide a copy of the child’s birth certificate as proof of naming. So, we might be hearing the names Twifia and Twifius more often than we’d ever expected.
While we don’t think the name sounds very “hearty” we agree with the father that there are much worse names. Would you name your child Twifia or Twifius for free internet?
