On Sunday, the world commemorated the incredible and generous life of Dame Olivia Newton-John AC DBE, who passed away on August 8, 2022, after a long battle with breast cancer – she was 73 years old. She was joined by many of her closest friends, family members, and others who were inspired by her.
Some of the stars who took the stage to remember the late great were Elton John, Mariah Carey, Hugh Jackman, Nicole Kidman, Mariah Carey, Keith Urban, Pink, RuPaul, and Dolly Parton – who recently released an incredible ‘Jolene’ duet that was recorded prior to her passing. The tributes were special.
Perhaps one of the more emotional tributes came from Newton-John’s 37-year-old daughter, Chloe Rose Lattanzi. She’s the only daughter of the iconic singer and actress, who she shared with ex-husband Matt Lattanzi. They married in December 1984 and welcomed Chloe two years later before divorcing in 1995.
Chloe opened her emotional speech by expressing how her heart has been ‘broken in two’ since learning of her mother’s passing – adding that the other half of her heart currently lies with her mama, who she feels is ‘holding it for me until we meet again.’ Chloe was joined onstage by her husband, James Driskill.
She went on to admit that she feels like a ‘little girl lost without her mother’ and, while she wanted to ‘feel strong and confident and speak eloquently,’ that simply wasn’t the case. “She was my safe space, my guide, my biggest fan, and the earth beneath my feet,” she continued at Sunday’s state memorial service.

“I love how she loved: fully and completely,” Lattanzi said. “She would want us all to laugh and reminisce together in joy and celebrate her life. This life experience is temporary, and my mother is the perfect example of a life truly lived,” said Chloe – adding she knows her mother is standing beside her always.
Among the many memories she shared with the audience – who gathered at Hamer Hall, Arts Centre Melbourne – were the ‘trashy TV shows’ they watched and the music they created together. Prior to the service commencing, a photo tribute containing pictures from ONJ’s personal collection was shared.
John Easterling Shares Emotional Tribute for Olivia Newton-John
Olivia Newton John was also remembered by her widower, John Easterling, who shared an emotional 16-minute long speech that contained a beautiful story about the couple’s engagement. It’s common for couples to have a good engagement story, but this one was certainly unique and will make you laugh.
He had planned on proposing to her while hiking along the Red Rock Canyons – where they decided to take a small vacation. While the perfect moment never came – due to some obstacles that ‘disturbed the moment’ – he eventually decided to go for it while playing a game of charades on Valentine’s Day.

“The secret phrase was ‘Will you marry me?’ And she got ‘will’ and she got ‘you,’ and then I said it rhymes with ‘hairy,’ and then out of nowhere she just said, ‘Will you marry me?’ And I said, ‘Yes.’ “She looked stunned for a minute, and then started laughing … but that’s the story of how Olivia proposed to me.”
