Former Backstreet Boys’ singer, Nick Carter, is being sued by former Dream singer Melissa Schuman for an incident that occurred in 2002 when he was 22 years old and she was 18. The lawsuit claims that he forced himself onto her and raped her – taking her virginity, despite her various attempts at saying no.
The incident began when Carter forced her into a bathroom and started to perform oral sex on her. He proceeded to force her to return the favor before forcing her into a bedroom – where he raped her, despite her being open about wanting to save herself for marriage. Nick Carter has denied these allegations.
Schuman originally spoke of the incident in November 2017 when she tried to have Carter criminally charged over the allegations. Despite filing a police report, the District Attorney’s office declined to prosecute him on the grounds that the statute of limitations for the incident had expired back in 2013.

“I am shocked and saddened by Ms. Schuman’s accusations. Melissa never expressed to me while we were together or at any time since that anything we did was not consensual,” Nick said of his relationship with Schuman. “I was always respectful and supportive of Melissa both personally and professionally.”
While the case was originally declined, Melissa Schuman is arguing that a new law revalidates her claim – hence the lawsuit being filed. Her lawsuit comes just a few months after another accuser, Shannon Ruth, filed a lawsuit against Nick Carter in December. He has decided to countersue both women.
In addition to denying the allegations, Nick Carter is claiming the allegations are being used to defame, destroy, vilify, and ruin Carter’s reputation. He’s seeking $2.35 million in his countersuit – which is the amount he claims the allegations have cost him in lost opportunities as his reputation deteriorates.
On the other hand, Melissa Schuman is claiming that her solo career never took off because of the incident. While she wanted to speak out sooner, she was told that it would ruin her career and that she would be seen as a problem to those in the music industry. More information should be released soon.
Attorney Says Nick Carter Calls the Lawsuit a ‘PR Stunt’
While Nick Carter has yet to address the most recent lawsuit against him, his lawyer – Lianae K. Wakayama – called out Schuman for ‘plotting to damage, defame, and extort Nick.’ She went on to say that Schuman’s claims were false back in 2017 and that nothing has changed in the past five years.
“Melissa Schuman has been peddling this tale for many years, but her allegation was false when she first made it back in 2017 – and it still is,” she said. “A judge in Nevada recently ruled, after reviewing the extensive evidence we laid out, that there are strong grounds for Nick Carter to proceed with his lawsuit.”
She went on to call Schuman’s lawsuit both ‘pathetic’ and ‘predictable’ – calling it a ‘PR stunt’ that won’t deter Nick from holding both Schuman and Ruth accountable for their false accusations. He continues to deny all allegations brought forth by the two women and says everything was consensual between them.
