Naomi Biden and Peter Neal are officially newlyweds after exchanging vows on the South Lawn at the White House on November 19. Naomi is the eldest daughter of Hunter Biden and eldest granddaughter of President Joe Biden and First Lady Jill Biden. It’s the first wedding at the White House in nine years.
The couple has been engaged since September 2021, when Neal proposed to the love of his life near his childhood home in Jackson Hole, Wyoming. It was a touching moment that featured family members and loved ones celebrating the engagement. Naomi revealed the news on Instagram on September 4, 2021.
Their relationship dates back four years and it’s all thanks to a mutual friend, who originally set them up on a date. And while their relationship is finally coming full circle, they weren’t the only ones celebrating this weekend. On November 20th, the day after the wedding, Joe Biden celebrated his 80th birthday.

It was a beautiful wedding that was broken down into three different parts. First, they had the wedding ceremony, which started around 11:20 AM and lasted about a half hour. It took place outside on the South Lawn, which has never been used for a wedding. It was chilly, but guests were given blankets as they sat.
Guests – including the Bidens – were also given a COVID-19 test to ensure safety. The bride, who was ushered down the aisle by her parents (Hunter Biden and Kathleen Buhle), wore a stunning dress designed by Ralph Lauren. She had Bitter Sweet Symphony by The Verve playing while she walked.
The two exchanged their own vows, which was followed by an intimate, ‘family-and-wedding-party-only’ luncheon inside the White House. Later that night, a larger reception was thrown that included about 325 guests. It was a black-tie reception that consisted of nearly five hours of dessert, dancing, and festivities.
The wedding cake was incredible, featuring seven tiers that required a small ladder to cut. It was placed in the Blue Room – located on the first floor of the White House. The guests – who were asked to give up their cell phones during the event – were given a slice of the delicious, beautiful cake as a parting gift.Â
Naomi Biden is the First Granddaughter of a President to Wed at the White House
Naomi Biden made history on Saturday, becoming the first granddaughter of a sitting President to get married at the White House – she’s also the first person to ever get married on the South Lawn. With that said, the White House is no stranger to weddings – having been done dozens of times in the past.Â
The first time a wedding took place at the White House was in 1812 when James Madison hosted his sister-in-law’s wedding. The last time it was done was in 2013, when then-President Barack Obama hosted Pete Souza – then-chief photographer – and his fiancee, Patti Lease, at the Rose Garden.Â
There was only one sitting President to get married at the White House – Grover Cleveland got married in the Blue Room in 1886. There were also several children of a sitting President to get married at the White House – including James Madison’s daughter, John Quincy Adams’ son, Richard Nixon’s daughter, and Lyndon B. Johnson’s son.
