My Water Broke and I Was Sent Home: Has This Happened to Anyone Else?

A mom writes in asking for advice after her water broke when she was just 34.5 weeks pregnant. However, when she ended up not going into labor, her doctors sent her home and told her to go back if she becomes worried about the well-being of her unborn child. Now, she’s wondering if any other mother’s experienced anything similar and if it was normal for her to be sent home?

“Basically, I am 34.5 weeks pregnant. [During the] early hours [of] Tuesday morning, my water broke. I was kept in the hospital overnight on antibiotics, two steroid injections for baby’s lungs, if she does decide to make an appearance. Anyways, I always believed they couldn’t let the baby stay inside you after 48 hours of [the water breaking] due to infections that may occur.

Anyways, they sent me home last night with antibiotics [and] no follow up an appointment!! Nothing!! Just basically, mother-instinct knows best and to go back if I am worried about the baby, but I am worried sick. Has anyone else experienced this?

When I had a scan yesterday, I have 1.5 cm of fluid left around the baby, but the lady who scanned me said I should have at least between 2 and 8 cm? I am just so worried and don’t who to listen to as every doctor I spoke to told me someone different.”

While many suggested that the mother visit her doctor again if she’s worried, others shared their own experiences in hopes that it will help the expectant mom make an informed decision on what to do next.

One commenter wrote, “When my water broke early they made me stay in the hospital until I was far enough in my pregnancy to be induced.” Another mom said, “This is insane! Go back! When my water broke I kept pushing to be seen! I was 34 weeks when my son was born.” And one mom added, “Yeah I would go to another hospital. My water broke just as I was being released after going in for contractions and they told me they had to keep me since my water broke because that puts me at risk for infection.”
