My Daughter Hates Her Daycare So Much She’s Made Herself Sick. What Do I Do?

A mom writes in asking for advice. Her three-year-old daughter started daycare a week and a half ago and is miserable. She cries the whole time she’s there — one day she cried so hard she made herself sick — and when I pick her up she begs not to go back the next day and worries all night about what time she’ll be dropped off the next day. This mom says everyone tells her her daughter will get over it, but she isn’t sure. She wants to know if any other moms have experienced this.

“My daughter is three and just started daycare. She has one church friend that goes there three days a week. The daycare goes from 6:00 AM to 6:00 PM, but my daughter only goes from 8 AM to 4 PM or so. She’s been going for a week and a half and she cries so hard that one day she got sick and they had to change her.

From the moment I pick her up she begs not to go the next day, and worries all night about what time I’m going to get her the following day.

At daycare she won’t do anything. She won’t nap with the other kids or play or eat much with them, except the one friend she has. I’m just not sure what to expect. A lot of people say she will get over it, but she REALLY doesn’t like it. Any one else experience this?

Most commenters told this mom to trust her gut when it comes to whether this is the right school for her daughter. They advised the OP that it often does take several weeks for a child to settle in to a new environment, but that if she feels anything is off about the school, she should switch. One commenter advised the OP to drop by the school unannounced to check things out.

Others advised talking to the teachers to see what they’re doing to help her daughter adjust. And some commenters recommended asking her daughter directly what’s going on — why doesn’t she like school? — and then trusting her answers and making a change if needed. Overall: transitions are hard, particularly for young kids, and the fix may just be more time, but the OP should ensure her child is in a safe, loving environment.
