A mom writes in asking for advice now that she is preparing to give birth alone after she and her husband continue to go through with their divorce. The estranged husband doesn’t want to be apart of the delivery process anymore and her family will be caring for her other children while she’s in the hospital. Now she’s looking for advice and encouragement from other moms who endured a similar journey.

A member of the community asks:

“I am currently 32 weeks pregnant and already a mom to two beautiful girls, [who are] 9 and 5. I am currently going through a separation and divorce from my husband after being married for six years, who is the father of my baby boy! We also share a 5-year-old girl… I’ve decided to go through the labor and delivery alone since I’ve done the whole pregnancy alone. [The] dad agrees he doesn’t want to share this moment.

My family won’t be able to be there as they are my care for my daughters while I deliver. I guess my question is if anyone has gone through this and am I crazy? Will the nurses be supportive and what should I expect going at it alone? And any words of encouragement or advice would be great!”

Advice Summary

Here is some of the advice other moms shared. One commenter wrote, “My kids have the same dad but their dad left me and didn’t come to my second son’s birth and my mom watched my oldest, so I did it alone. It was a little sad but my family came to visit once my oldest woke up in the morning. My dad offered to be there but I didn’t think it was fair to my mom. I bonded with him much quicker this way though! I held him for thirteen hours straight.”

Another mom wrote, “I left my baby’s dad when I was pregnant (long complicated story). But I then decided I wanted to give birth alone, my mum was there when I was in early stages of labor but went home to get some sleep, etc. And my little girl must have known what I wanted as she arrived a few minutes before my mum came back to the hospital. My midwives and nurses were lovely.”

And one person added, “I did it alone! It’s possible. The nurses and doctors will be very supportive. [Wear] headphones and music to make it through the contractions. It is a different experience but it can be more peaceful. If you need a buddy and are in Kissimmee by chance I don’t mind being there for you.”
