On March 27, 2022, the entertainment industry was blindsided by the slap heard “round the world,” and while many have placed the moment in their archives, Mila Kunis is keeping receipts. She recently opened up about the jiff, more than six months later, in a C Magazine cover story.
Kunis was at the Dolby Theatre that fateful day in March when Will Smith slapped Chris Rock across the face on stage at the Academy Awards, also known as the Oscars. It came after Rock made a questionable and offensive G.I. Jane joke about Smith’s wife, Jada Pinkett Smith.
It was one of the most staggering and appalling moments in Oscars’ history, leaving the entire room silent with their jaws dropped. Smith originally laughed with the crowd at the joke, but that changed when he noticed his wife wasn’t laughing – who shaved her head due to alopecia.

Despite the incident, neither Smith nor Rock were asked to leave the award ceremony and Smith ended up winning an award. His winning speech received a standing ovation from the majority of the crowd, something Kunis and her husband, Ashton Kutcher, didn’t take part in.
In fact, she was whole-heartedly surprised that so many others were clapping and cheering for someone who just assaulted a fellow actor on stage. “The idea of leading by example only makes sense when you actually have someone to lead,” Kunis told C Magazine in a cover story.
“Not standing up to me was a no-brainer, but what was shocking to me was how many people did stand up. I thought, wow, what a time we’re living in that rather than do what’s right, people focus on doing what looks good. It’s insane to me,” the That ‘70s Show actress explained.
She thought of her children and the type of example she wants to set for them. “We have our tiny little tribe here at home, and never once do I want to tell them to do something if I’m not willing to do it myself,” she added.
Since the slap, Smith has made several public apologies but has mostly stayed out of the limelight. He also immediately resigned from the Academy and was banned from the award ceremony for 10 years. During that time, he can still be nominated for and win an Oscar.
What Else Did Mila Kunis Reveal in Her C Magazine Cover Story?
In her cover story, Mila Kunis opened up about her ‘tiny little tribe’ with Ashton Kutcher, which includes her five-year-old son, Dmitri (Bear), and seven-year-old daughter Wyatt. She did the interview in her Beverly Hills ranch, with Kutcher in the middle of a Peloton interview.
“Welcome to the chaos,” Kunis said as the interviewer took in the many sights and sounds of the KuKus’ household. At the time, Dmitri was playing the grand piano and Wyatt was ‘playing intern’ while a film crew shot Kutcher’s interview with Jon Baptiste. Sounds like chaos, indeed.
Kunis – who was born in Ukraine – also opened up about being Ukrainian and helping her children make sense of the war in Ukraine. Here’s an excerpt from the interview:
“Having kids changes your perspective. When I was in my twenties, even my teens, my drive was always ‘how can I be more successful at work?’ After I had kids, it was ‘how can I be a person that I want my kids to admire?’ So I went from career growth to self-growth,” she said.
In response to Russia’s invasion of her home country, Mila Kunis and her husband helped raise more than $40 million to help send supplies to Ukraine. It’s just one of the many good deeds this couple is known for.
