A western Michigan couple had boy after boy for decades until finally, that changed and they had their first daughter! Kateri Schwandt and her husband Jay welcomed their little girl, Maggie Jayne on Thursday.
The proud parents have finally given their fourteen boys an opportunity to be great big brothers to a little sister. The Detroit Free Press reports that the baby’s name comes from Kateri’s middle name, Margaret and Jayne is a clever play on her father’s name.
After 14 boys, a Michigan couple finally welcomed their first daughter this week.
“We are overjoyed and beyond excited to add Maggie Jayne to our family,” Jay, 45, told DFP. “This year has been memorable in so many ways, for so many reasons, but Maggie is the greatest gift we could ever imagine.”
Baby Maggie weighed 7 lbs., 8 oz. at birth, and was born to the couple at Mercy Health Saint Mary’s Hospital in Grand Rapids.
Maggie follows brothers: Tyler, Zach, Drew, Brandon, Tommy, Vinny, Calvan, Gabe, Wesley, Charlie, Luke, Tucker, Francisco, and Finley, whose ages range from 2 to 28 years old.
“My parents were finally blessed with the little girl they never thought they’d end up having. It’s been about 12 hours since my dad told us, and I still haven’t quite wrapped my mind around it,” Tyler, the oldest son, told the Free Press.
People reports that Maggie’s mom, Kateri comes from a very large family herself and is also one of fourteen children. Kateri and Jay were high school sweethearts who met their freshmen year while they attended Gaylord High School and Gaylord St. Mary’s.
They attended Ferris State University and the couple had three children together before they even graduated.
Their family has a live-streaming program called 14 Outdoorsmen, and they’ve made headlines in the past each time they’ve added to their family.
“If we were to have a girl, I think we would go into shock,” Kateri told MLive in 2014. “It would probably be disbelief.”
And earlier this year, after Kateri announced she was pregnant, she said that “there’s enough testosterone” in the house to “fill a stadium” and if they had a little girl, she’d be “the most spoiled and protected child her entire life, especially during her teenage years.”
Jay, on the other hand, told the outlet he hoped that one day they would have a daughter, just to switch things up. He added that there’s always a lot of roughhousing and wrestling, but a little girl might change all that.

“I’ve experienced all the boy stuff,” he said. “As long as we are having all these children, it would be really neat to experience the other side.”
