It’s been a big couple of days for Actress Michelle Williams. While the mom-of-one usually keeps away from the spotlight when not working, Williams has been the talk of the town recently.
Not only did the actress recently get engaged to the father of her unborn child, director Thomas Kail, but on January 5, Williams took the world by storm with her Golden Globes acceptance speech.

During the three-hour-long award show, Williams received a standing ovation for the passionate speech she gave after she won the Golden Globe for best actress in a limited series or TV movie for her role in drama series Fosse/Verdon.
Fosse/Verdon is also where Williams met her new beau, Kail, who directed the drama. During her speech, Williams encouraged women to vote and advocated for their right to choose.
Michelle Williams Uses Golden Globe Speech to Talk About Women’s Rights
The actress began by explaining how winning an award for her work on-screen validates the choices she made in that particular role:
“I am grateful for the acknowledgement of the choices I made. I am also grateful to live in a moment in our society where choice exists because as women and as girls, things can happen to our bodies that are not our choice. I’ve tried my very best to live a life of my own making, not just a series of events that happened to me, but one that I could stand back and look at and recognize my handwriting all over, sometimes messy and scrawling, sometimes careful and precise, but one that I carved with my own hand.”
Williams continued, “And I wouldn’t have been able to do this without employing a woman’s right to choose when to have my children, and with whom, when I felt supported and able to balance our lives, knowing as all mothers know that the scales must and will tip towards our children.”

She added that while her choices will look different than other women’s choices, it is a privilege to live in a country where women can make those choices legally. William’s then encouraged women ages 18 to 118 to “vote in your own self-interest. It’s what men have been doing for years, which is why the world looks so much like them.”
However, it was at the end of her speech which she acknowledged her 13-year-old daughter and her relationship with Kail publicly, saying, “Tommy and Matilda, I can’t wait to come home to you.”
