What happens when one family member wins the lottery and the others don’t quite have the same luck?
That’s what one father has been struggling with over the holidays, so he took the predicament to the Reddit community.
The writer shares that he has a holiday tradition of buying scratch-off lottery tickets for his teenage daughter. The only rule is that any amount of winnings over a hundred dollars go directly into a savings account.
This year, he decided to include his stepdaughter by also purchasing her lottery tickets.
“My stepdaughter scratched hers and won $10. My daughter scratched hers and won $300,” he writes. “So I cashed them in and gave my daughter $100 and my stepdaughter the $10.”
The man’s wife feels strongly that the girls should split the winnings.
“My stepdaughter was disappointed and my wife thinks I should have split up the money evenly so each of the girls got at least $55 to spend and $100 to save since the ticket and money were technically mine legally.”
However, the father doesn’t agree that the money should be split evenly.
“I don’t think splitting up my daughter’s money would have been fair to her. I certainly wouldn’t have made my stepdaughter give mine any of her winnings if she won more.”
Turning to the Reddit community, the dad asked, “Am I the a**hole for not making my daughter share her lottery winnings with her stepsister?”
While the post received supporters on each side of the argument, most were quick to come to the dad’s defense saying that this is exactly how the lottery works… you win some, you lose some.
