Legendary Actor Known for His Memorable Performance in ‘Deliverance’ Has Tragically Died

Deliverance
Legendary star of the classic 1972 movie Deliverance has passed away.

According to several reports, Herbert “Cowboy” Coward, who played the iconic role as the Toothless Man in the film, tragically passed away at the age of 85, alongside his girlfriend Bertha Brooks, 78.

As FOX Carolina reports, Herbert and Bertha, as well as their pet dog and squirrel passed away after being involved in a two-car vehicular accident.

Authorities confirmed that Herbert was hit by an oncoming truck as he was turning on the North Carolina highway. The 16-year-old driving the truck was not believed to be speeding and was not charged.

The teen was taken to the hospital with injuries.

The Deliverance star is survived by his four children, who he shared with his wife of 51 years. Dorothy passed away 13 years ago.

Mayor Zeb Smathers confirmed Herbert’s passing publicly, writing, “With every trip around the sun, I realize more and more the importance of smiles. For years and for thousands of people, especially children, Cowboy Coward, his antics, and his squirrel put smiles on so many faces.  Whether it be at the grocery store or a random encounter, Cowboy would laugh, take a picture, and confirm yes that was him in ‘Deliverence.’ He was Canton’s direct connection to Hollywood and Burt Reynolds.  We will pray for his family and all involved in the tragic accident and enjoy the moments we shared with him.

In the end all that needs to be said is ‘Good ride Cowboy. Good ride.’”

This is a developing report.
