Lance Reddick’s Official Cause of Death Revealed

New information regarding Lance Reddick’s untimely cause of death is coming to light. According to TMZ, while initial reports labeled his cause of death as “natural causes,” his death certificate reveals more detail.

According to the certificate, Reddick had been battling heart disease, specifically, “Ischemic heart disease and Atherosclerotic coronary artery disease.” As the VA reports, “Ischemic heart disease is also known as coronary artery disease or ‘hardening of the arteries.’ Cholesterol plaque can build up in the arteries of the heart and cause ‘ischemia,’ which means the heart is not getting enough blood flow and oxygen.”

It further revealed that Reddick was cremated.

Lance Reddick, who is best known for his roles in The Wire and the John Wick franchise, suddenly passed away on March 17 at his home in Los Angeles, California. He was 60 years old at the time of his death, which came less than two months away from his birthday – he was set to turn 61 on June 7. 

Reddick’s publicist, Mia Hansen, confirmed his death in a statement, adding that he died of ‘natural causes,’ according to the Associated Press – though no exact cause of death was revealed and no further details were provided. His death rocked the film/TV  industry as many paid tribute to his life and career.

Lance Reddick is survived by his wife, Stephanie Reddick, and his two children from a previous marriage to Suzanne Yvonne Louis – daughter Yvonne Nicole and son Christopher. Reddick was known for keeping his private life as private as possible, but we do know he married Stephanie in June 2011.

On Saturday, just one day after his passing, Stephanie Reddick took to Instagram to remember her late husband. She expressed how he was ‘taken from us far too soon’ and thanked everyone – both his fans and those in the entertainment industry – for their ‘overwhelming love, support, and beautiful stories.’

“I see your messages and can’t begin to express how grateful I am to have them. And to the thousands of Destiny (video game) players who played in special tribute to Lance, thank you. Lance loved you as much as he loved the game,” she wrote in the Instagram caption, sharing several photos of Lance Reddick. 

Reddick had roles in CSI: Miami and Law & Order: Special Victims Unit before receiving his big break in Season 4 of Oz. One year later, he was cast as Cedric Daniels in The Wire and eventually earned main roles in Fringe (2008-2013) and Bosch (2014-2021). He made appearances in dozens of other TV shows.

As for film, he is best known for his role as Charon in the John Wick franchise – appearing in the first three films, as well as the fourth, which is set to release on March 24, 2023. He also made appearances in One Night in Miami, The Domestics, White House Down, Monster Party, and Angel Has Fallen.

Lance Reddick Has Several Projects in the Works

Lance Reddick is one of the most respected actors in Hollywood – evidenced by the many actors, directors, and content platforms that have paid tribute to the late actor. His career as an actor dates back to 1983 and he continued to master his craft for 40 years. In fact, he had so much more left to give. 

In addition to John Wick: Chapter 4, which is set to release in just a week, Reddick had several other projects in the works at the time of his death. For example, he was working on four other films when he died – including Shirley, White Men Can’t Jump (remake), Ballerina, and The Caine Mutiny Court-Martial. 

Not only that, but he was working on Season 2 of Farzar, which is set to release in July 2023, and Percy Jackson and the Olympians – he was cast as Zeus and the show is set for a 2024 premiere. Reddick loved what we did and he was good at it. His unique abilities will be missed in the entertainment industry.

“I’m an artist at heart. I feel that I’m very good at what I do. When I went to drama school, I knew I was at least as talented as other students, but because I was a Black man and I wasn’t pretty, I knew I would have to work my butt off to be the best that I would be and to be noticed,” he said in a 2009 interview.
