Kristin Davis is mother to two adopted children: Her 7-year-old daughter, Gemma, and a baby boy she just adopted last year. Recently, she spoke candidly about the experience of adopting two young African-American children. The Goodwill Ambassador and Sex and the City star was interviewed on the Facebook Watch series, Red Table Talk, by Jada Pinkett Smith and Adrienne Banfield-Jones.
During the interview, titled, “Should White People Adopt Black Kids,” Davis describes her journey to adoption, saying, “I had already thought about [adoption] . . . it had seemed like an option for me for a very long time. I felt like there was a child out there who I needed to find that was my child. I can’t explain it. It was a spiritual kind of a thing . . . [Adoption] is a long road. It’s not an easy road.”

Davis was emotional as she described how she works daily to ensure her children feel part of the black community. “Because my children are African American I feel like it is my duty and my job to do as much research, as much work, build as many bridges as possible because you are their community,” she said. “So I work at it every day, trying to figure out how I can make sure they have access to the black community, that they’re part of it.”
Davis also acknowledged that being a mom to two African-American children has made her view white privilege differently. Before becoming their mother, she understood the broader concept but had not understood how much it affects people on a daily basis.
“It’s one thing to be watching it happening to other people, and it’s another thing when it’s your child. And you haven’t personally been through it. It’s a big issue. It’s something I think about every day and every night.”
Davis shared a piece of the interview on her Instagram, saying “I have endless respect for Jada and her mom (and @willowsmith) for starting #rtt as a way to build bridges in our fractured world. We discuss my ongoing journey to be the best mother I can be to my two children, and we try to address misconceptions about the adoption process. I can only speak about my own journey, and each person’s story is different. But my wish was to have an honest dialogue with two powerful women who are part of my children’s community. I cannot thank Jada and Gammy enough for their warmth and fearlessness, I admire them so much. It was such a special experience.”
