Actress Kristen Wiig is known for being the funny one in her classic movies, like Bridesmaids or Masterminds. However, in a recent interview, Wiig is getting serious about her journey towards motherhood.
Currently, Wiig is engaged to be married to actor Avi Rothman and in January 2020 the couple welcomed twins into the world. And while Wiig couldn’t be happier about finally being a mom.

Her IVF Journey
As Wiig explained to InStyle, a good three years of her five-year relationship with Rothman “were spent in an IVF haze.” As she continued, Wiig admitted that undergoing years of IVF was one of, if not the most, challenging periods of her life.
“Emotionally, spiritually, and medically, it was probably the most difficult time in my life. I wasn’t myself. There are so many emotions that go with it—you’re always waiting by the phone and getting test results, and it was just bad news after bad news. Occasionally there would be a good month, but then it was just more bad news.”
It got to a point where Wiig couldn’t even talk about her IVF journey anymore because it made her so sad. But what she quickly realized was that when she did talk about her struggles with in vitro fertilization, there was always someone out there who understood her pain either firsthand or secondhand.
“It’s like this underground community that’s talked about but not talked about,” Wiig told InStyle.
However, despite how difficult IVF was to endure, Wiig was determined to become a mother by way of carrying her own child for nine months. But doctors continued to encourage her to seek other options, even if it was something she didn’t want to hear. “Nope. Don’t ever bring that up again,” Wiig said she would tell her doctors. “I’m getting pregnant. I’m doing this.”
Her Surrogacy Journey
Although Wiig desperately wanted to carry her own child, there came a time when she knew she needed to look at other options. It was then that she started looking into surrogacy, a bitter but sweet moment, she told InStyle.
“I became really close with our surrogate, and it was her first time doing it so we kind of went through everything together. When the children were born, I wanted to make sure she was OK and she wanted to make sure I was OK. It was a lot of navigating through emotions and respecting that she had a connection with them and trying to be really honest about how I was feeling. Ultimately, I realized that I’m very fortunate. I’m grateful. I’m a different person now.”

Now Wiig’s babies are 9 months old. And while she will continue to keep her children’s lives as private as possible, she knows how helpful it was to read about other women’s journeys towards motherhood. And because of that, Wiig says she is “trying to find that space where I can keep my privacy and also be there for someone else who may be going through it.” Beautiful.
