While breast milk is nutritional for babies, Dr. Sarah Steele of Queen Mary University of London once wrote in a 2015 study that “human breast milk is not delivering the nutritional benefit it touts online” for adults.
However, as Kourtney Kardashian shared while laying sick in bed, she just drank a glass of her own breast milk. “I just pounded a glass of breast milk because I feel sick,” the reality star wrote. Goodnight!”
But does that work?
Dr. Christine Greves, an OB/GYN at the Orlando Health Winnie Palmer Hospital For Women and Babies, told NBC 10 “Never ever do I want to shame anyone for doing what they think is best for their body.”
However, as Dr. Greves continued, “as far as people drinking breast milk, this is something we don’t have studies on, so I can’t say whether it’s good or it’s bad.” She did however bring up the 2015 study mentioned above.
As the Journal of the Royal Society of Medicine reports, “no scientific study has evidenced that direct adult consumption of human milk for medicinal properties offers anything more than a placebo effect.”
So instead of reaching for a glass of human milk or someone else’s, Dr. Greves offered some alternatives. “If you’re feeling run down, whether you’re lactating or not, you may want to try over-the-counter immune assistance,” she told NBC 10.
“Make sure you try to get rest, stay well hydrated and isolate yourself from people that could get sick.”
