After coming out with a maternity shapewear line, SKIM’s creator Kim Kardashian West is speaking out following the backlash the line has received. No, Kim isn’t getting slammed because the pieces in her newest line are poorly made, she’s getting slammed because people think she is trying to use her product to help pregnant women look slimmer.
While promoting the new line on Instagram, Kim said it was what her customers had been waiting for. “Introducing Maternity Solutionwear™ that offers the best in comfort and support for your changing body during and after pregnancy,” the reality star wrote.

However, after sharing the same news on Twitter, people began to shame the new line for encouraging women to slim their bodies while pregnant. “I’m sure that’s the one thing pregnant women need above all! Being pressed to a slimmer figure,” one commenter wrote.
“Excuse my ignorance but who’s trynna shape their pregnant bodies? Y’all don’t like being comfy and free and loose when pregnant? It’s pretty much the only time you can be as shapeless and free and comfy as you want,” another commenter added.
However, other people, women who have experienced pregnancy, later defended the line saying having support around their baby bump was actually very comforting. “I personally liked having ‘support’ when I was pregnant. I have size G breasts and combined with a heavy belly, I needed some compression. But I didn’t wear support style clothing to ‘look good,'” one woman wrote.
“Lol of course the day I’m getting induced! Wish I had this before!!!! Really awesome though,” another mom added. And as Kim later said in a statement she shared addressing the backlash, it is comments like that that encouraged her to create such a line.
“To anyone who has an issue with maternity solutionwear, and if you haven’t been pregnant before you may not know the struggle of what it’s like carrying all of this weight the way I did along with millions of strong women, @skims maternity line is not to slim but to support,” Kim began her statement.
“The belly part doesn’t slim your belly, it’s actually sheer and a thinner layered material compared to the rest of the garment. It provides support to help with the uncomfortable weight being carried in your stomach which affects your lower back and the compression on the leggings helps with pain relief caused by swelling. It is also worn after you have given birth and provides the comfort and support that most women need after delivery especially if you are recovering from a cesarean.”
As Kim continued, the maternity solutionware line was launched “in response to the tens of thousands of pregnant women who wrote us requesting it and because it was something I personally needed when I was pregnant myself.”
“Based on the majority of positive feedback we have received so far from pregnant women around the world, I am incredibly proud to provide a solution that will provide comfort and support during the times that we all need it most, during pregnancy and after,” the mom of four concluded.
Among her celebrity supporters is Chrissy Teigen, who is currently pregnant with her third child. Teigen shared her thoughts on the new line on Instagram and Twitter. And as it turns out, Teigen is also a proud owner of Kim Kardashian West’s maternity line.
