Kelly Clarkson is telling her ex-husband, Brandon Blackstock, how she really feels about their divorce – subliminally, at least. She appeared to diss him and the divorce numerous times during a Kellyoke segment of her daytime television show, The Kelly Clarkson Show, and fans were quick to point it out.
During the performance, she sang a cover of Gayle’s hit song ABCDEFU and ended up changing some of the lyrics to better suit her own emotions and feelings – including the fact that she had to give him half of their possessions and the fact that she had to turn her broken heart into a work of art (a new album).
“Forget you and your dad / And the fact that you got half / And my broken heart, turned that s–t into art,” she belted out. “Forget you and your friends / That I’ll never see again / Everybody but your dog / You can all get lost,” she sang – which aren’t the original lyrics but are fairly close to the lyrics Gayle sings.
Kelly Clarkson didn’t go into depth about the meaning behind the updated lyrics or the reasoning behind calling her ex-husband out, but those that have followed her divorce know where she is coming from. For those that haven’t followed or might be a little lost as to the deeper meaning, we’ll break it down for you.
First, there’s the ‘fact that you got half’ line – which alludes to her divorce settlement with Brandon Blackstock. The divorce was filed by Clarkson in June 2020 and finalized in March 2022 after she settled to pay him $1,326,161 – as well as $115,000 in monthly spousal support and $45,601 in child support.
The divorce settlement also left them with joint legal custody over their two children – River Rose, 7, and Remington Alexander, 5 – but Clarkson had to give Blackstock a one-time payment of $350,000 for their children’s travel arrangements. Clarkson was also awarded the family’s pets – another lyrical easter egg.
As for her ‘forget you and your dad’ lyric, that allegedly refers to the lawsuit filed by Blackstock’s father against Clarkson – which alleges that the singer owes nearly $1.4 million in commission for her TV show. And the ‘you can all get lost’ lyric, well, that proves she’s completely done with him and all the drama.
Kelly Clarkson Also Alludes to Her Upcoming Album
Another potential easter egg in the lyrics was her ‘And my broken heart, turned that s**t into art’ line – which potentially alludes to her upcoming album, Chemistry. She has previously talked about the album, which doesn’t have a release date at the moment, and how it tells the story of her marriage and divorce.
“I was trying to find a word that really described the whole thing because I didn’t want everybody to think I was just coming out with some just like, ‘I’m angry. I’m sad. A whole relationship shouldn’t be just brought down to one thing. So there’s the good, the bad, and the ugly kind of thing going on,” she said recently.
She later explained how the word ‘chemistry’ can be a positive thing, but also comes with some negativity at times. “Chemistry can be a really amazing, sexy, cool, fun thing, but it can also be very bad for you,” she said in an Instagram post, where she excitedly announced that she has new music coming very soon.

Kelly Clarkson hasn’t released a regular studio album since her 2017 hit album Meaning of Life. She did, however, release a Christmas album – When Christmas Comes Around… – in 2021.
