Kate Middleton Honors Late Queen Elizabeth II’s Birthday With Rare Photo of Her Surrounded by Grandchildren and Great Grandchildren

Queen Elizabeth II was born on April 21, 1926 and would’ve celebrated her 97th birthday today – the late monarch passed away on September 8, 2022 after a 70-year reign on the British throne. She’s one of the most beloved leaders of all-time and was honored by many friends and family members on social media.

Among those to post about the late Queen was Kate Middleon on the Prince and Princess of Wales’ official Instagram. “Today would have been Her Late Majesty Queen Elizabeth’s 97th birthday,” she wrote in the caption – sharing a photo of the Queen surrounded by grandchildren and great grandchildren.

“This photograph – showing her with some of her grandchildren and great grandchildren – was taken at Balmoral last summer,” she continued. Kate Middleton also credited herself with taking the photograph – she has long had a passion for photography and showed her skills off with the beautiful and rare photo.

Queen Elizabeth II, who was 96 years old in the photo, was joined by 10 of her grandchildren and great grandchildren. Among those included are Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis – the three kids of Kate Middleton and Prince William, the Queen’s grandson who is first in line to the throne.

Lady Louise Windsor and James, Earl of Wessex – the daughter and son of Prince Edward, one of the Queen’s sons – were in the back of the photo, while Lena Tindall (daughter of Zara Tindall, the Queen’s granddaughter) and Isla Phillips (daughter of Peter Phillips, the Queen’s grandson) were also included.

Sitting to the left of the Queen (on the couch) is Savannah Phillips – the Queen’s eldest great grandchild and eldest daughter of Peter Phillips. Mia Tindall, who is holding her baby brother Lucas Tindall, is to the right of the Queen – Mia and Lucas are Zara’s other two children, who she shares with Mike Tindall.

Queen Elizabeth II is survived by her four children, eight grandchildren, and 12 great-grandchildren – a number that continues to rise as her grandchildren have more babies. Perhaps two of her most notable great grandchildren not in the photo are Archie and Lilibet – Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s kids.

Kate Middleton Wasn’t the Only One Honoring Queen Elizabeth II

In addition to the rare photograph of Queen Elizabeth II shared by Kate Middleton, the official Instagram account of The Royal Family shared a photo of the late monarch to honor her ‘incredible life and legacy’ on what would’ve been her 97th birthday. The Royal Family added a brief recap of her rise to the throne.

“When Her Majesty was born in April 1926, Princess Elizabeth and her family did not expect that she would one day become Queen. Following the abdication of her uncle King Edward VIII in 1936, her father acceded to the throne,” they wrote in the caption – she was next in line to the throne after her father.

She officially became Queen when her father, King George VI, died in February 1952. Queen Elizabeth II was just 25 years old when she took the throne and remained on that throne for the next 70 years – making her the longest-reigning monarch and ‘the only one in history to celebrate a Platinum Jubilee.’

Following her death on September 8, 2022, the late monarch’s son – King Charles III – took the throne and is now awaiting his coronation on May 6. It’s set to be the first coronation since 1953, meaning most UK citizens will be seeing it for the first time – making it quite the momentous and historic event.
