JoJo Siwa admits there was one conversation in particular she had with her mom that was harder to have than coming out….
Siwa, who came out as LGBTQ+ in January, admitted to Instagram head Adam Mosseri this past week during Instagram and Facebook’s Creator Week how her signature hair bow is not the center of her look these days…
The style switch was not easy, according to Siwa — as she’s “worn a bow for obviously the last 18 years of [her] life.” But on her her birthday, she felt the winds of change.
“I just had my 18th birthday and it was right around my birthday that I realized, ‘I kinda wanna do my hair different today,’ ” Siwa recalled, adding she “came out to the world and to my family and essentially to myself.”
“It just felt like the right time and to do something different and to do something maybe a little bit more mature or a little upgrade,” she admitted.
And when Siwa’s mother asked her if it was “harder to come out to me or tell me that you wanna wear your hair different?” Siwa was quick to answer.
“I was like, ‘It surprisingly was harder to tell you that I wanted to wear my hair different,’ ” Siwa recalled telling her mother, Jessalynn.
She went on to reveal how she wouldn’t be leaving her bows yet….
“The bow is still a part of my life,” Siwa said. “I still love bows, I forever will. They’re who I am, but maybe I won’t wear it every day.”
Last summer, Siwa sent her fans into shock after revealing her dyed brunette hair in a TikTok video. And in the same clip, Siwa wore her hair down in loose waves.

Siwa believed the internet’s reaction “hilarious”.
“I knew it would be a shock to people,” she said in an interview with Entertainment Tonight. “I knew it was going to be like, ‘Oh my gosh, JoJo put her hair down,’ because people just don’t see that. But I also did not expect it to go as [viral] as it did.”
Siwa shared back in April how she has known ever since she was little. Jessalynn added, “I did too. A mother knows.”
Siwa, who recently celebrated five months with her girlfriend Kylie Prew, also shared how she prefers being called gay or queer.
“I always just say gay because it just kind of covers it or queer because I think the keyword is cool,” she said, adding, “Technically I would say that I am pansexual because that’s how I have always been my whole life is just like, my human is my human.”
