John Stamos, father to 3-year-old son Billy, credits his sobriety to shaping him up for fatherhood.
“I know who I am certainly by 57 now,” Stamos said on this past Wednesday’s episode of E! News’ Daily Pop.
“It’s been close to six years in June that I sobered up,” Stamos continued. “I never could have been a father during some of the more – some of it was really fun and some of it got to be very unhealthy.”
In 2015, Stamos was charged with a DUI in June 2015, and checked himself into rehab for a 30-day substance abuse program afterward. Stamos went on to marry Caitlin McHugh in February 2018, and the two welcomed Billy that April.
“Being a parent is about sacrifice. You don’t get rewarded for it,” Stamos said Wednesday. “You don’t get a trophy or a ring, but what you do get is, you get a child who is more loving, more kind, and a smarter version of you, and I think that’s really special.”
Recently, Stamos praised Billy when the tot popped up onstage with him during a performance with the Beach Boys in San Diego.
“I had this beautiful moment last week at Petco’s stadium, where he sat on my lap during ‘God Only Knows’ and it was like a moment that I never thought I would ever have,” Stamos told Entertainment Tonight earlier this month. “You know, it was nice.”
Previously, Stamos admitted how fatherhood is “better than I imagined. I wanted kids my whole life. And I’m just so grateful.”
Last year, the star was diagnosed with COVID-19 and had to be quarantined with his family. And explaining that to little Billy was tough to say the least.

“Caitlin’s been telling him that I might have some germs and I have to take a test,” Stamos explained. “So every day, he goes, ‘Dad, you have germs? You have germs?’ “
Stamos revealed how he and his wife are hoping to have another child soon but because of quarantine — that made it difficult.
“When I’m locked upstairs in a room and she’s downstairs it makes it hard,” he said at the time. “We really would like two [kids] and honestly I think when this last quarantine hit, it was the wrong time because it was the right time to make a baby.”
But now that quarantine is over, maybe Billy will be getting a few new siblings soon!
