The frontman, John Roderick, of the indie rock group, the Long Winters, has been coined “Bean Dad,” after a tweet about him teaching his daughter how to open a can of beans went viral.
This weekend, Roderick posted a very long thread on how his 9-year-old daughter struggled using a can opener — but after old tweets using racist, homophobic and anti-Semitic language popped up, he promptly deleted his account.
“So, yesterday my daughter (9) was hungry and I was doing a jigsaw puzzle so I said over my shoulder “make some baked beans,'” the tweet thread begins.
“She said, ‘How?’ like all kids do when they want YOU to do it, so I said, ‘Open a can and put it in pot.’ She brought me the can and said Open it how?'”
And after many (many) hours, the can was finally opened. The thread quickly became a hot topic of conversation.

Needless to say, the public was NOT impressed.
Dionne Warwick tweeted: “Thanks for sending. I am not reading all of that (Bean Dad). However, it looks like nonsense.” While another user jested: “Bean dad: this will all blow over, i’m just gonna lay low. NY Times 2043: Bean Dad died peacefully today in his home”
Ken Jennings, Roderick’s co-host on the Omnibus podcast, came to Roderick’s aid after the dad received backlash for his ignorant and insensitive tweets.

Jennings, who recently apologized for his own “insensitive” tweets, shared: “Extremely jealous and annoyed that my podcast co-host is going to be a dictionary entry and I never will. If this reassures anyone, I personally know John to be (a) a loving and attentive dad who (b) tells heightened-for-effect stories about his own irascibility on like ten podcasts a week. This site is so dumb.”
And when asked about his anti-Semitic tweets, Jennings replied:
“If we’re word-searching through old tweets now, it’s pretty easy to find what he actually thinks about anti-Semitism,” he wrote. “On our show he’s always the pro-Israel one!”
