“This is for Chrissy,” singer John Legend said again while sharing his Billboard Music Awards performance on Instagram. As Mamas Uncut previously reported, Legend dedicated his latest live performance to his wife of seven years, Chrissy Teigen, after they lost their child at 21-weeks gestation.
During his performance, John Legend sang his song titled, Never Break. On Instagram, Legend shared that he “wrote this song because I have faith that as long as we walk this earth, we will hold each other’s hands through every tear, through every up and down, through every test.”

The song is ultimately an ode to the vows they made to each other when they married in 2013. “We promised each other this on our wedding day seven years ago, and every challenge we’ve faced has made that promise more powerful, more resilient,” Legend continued. “Our love will remain. We will never break.”
Having watched his wife endure one of the most difficult losses they have ever had to endure, Legend told his wife that he both “loves and cherishes” her and the family they made together “so much.” He called the strength Chrissy has shown during this difficult time admirable.
“We’ve experienced the highest highs and lowest lows together. Watching you carry our children has been so moving and humbling. I’m in awe of the strength you’ve shown through the most challenging moments. What an awesome gift it is to be able to bring life into the world. We’ve experienced the miracle, the power and joy of this gift, and now we’ve deeply felt its inherent fragility.”
Legend concluded his opened letter to his wife with gratitude, not only for her but for all of the people who have been sending them “prayers and well wishes, flowers, cards, words of comfort and empathy. We feel and appreciate your love and support more than you know.”
“More than anything, we’ve heard so many stories about how so many other families have experienced this pain, often suffering in silence,” Legend revealed. “It’s a club no one wants to be a part of, but it’s comforting to know we’re not alone.”
As Chrissy shared in a statement several days ago, their son—who they named Jack—passed away after they were unable to control the bleeding she was experiencing for weeks during her pregnancy. Prior to being hospitalized for excessive bleeding, Chrissy was diagnosed with a weak placenta, something she dealt with in her pregnancies with daughter Luna and son Miles as well.
“I’m sure Chrissy will have much more to say about this when she’s ready,” John Legend added in his letter. “But just know we’re grateful and we’re sending love to all of you and your families.”
