Joe And Jill Biden Adopt A German Shepherd Puppy Named ‘Commander’

President Joe Biden and first lady Jill Biden have welcomed a new puppy to their home amid the holiday season.

A new puppy, a pure-bred German Shepherd, was seen on Monday playing on the South Lawn of the White House. Jill Biden’s press secretary, Michael LaRosa, confirmed the news of a new family puppy.

“Yes. There is (a puppy),” LaRosa said. The puppy is named “Commander” and was a birthday gift to the President from his brother James Biden and sister-in-law Sara Biden.

Joe Biden celebrated his 79th birthday on November 20 and Commander was born on September 1. He arrived at the White House this past Monday afternoon.

The Bidens’ previous German Shepherd, Champ, died in June at the age of 13.

Their other German Shepherd, a rescue named Major, has been living mostly in Wilmington, Delaware, after multiple aggressive incidents involving staff at the White House. Reportedly, Major will continue to live away from the White House.

“After consulting with dog trainers, animal behaviorists, and veterinarians, the first family has decided to follow the experts’ collective recommendation that it would be safest for Major to live in a quieter environment with family friends,” LaRosa said.

While the choice to move Major was not in response to a specific incident – after “several months of deliberation” by the Biden family and “discussions with experts,” the choice was ultimately made.

“In March, Major bit two people — one a member of the Secret Service, another a National Park Service worker. And in April, the White House revealed Major would be going to Wilmington for extensive training to help him adjust to life in the White House.

Since then, sightings of Major at the White House have been minimal but a dog fence was erected around the Jacqueline Kennedy Garden on the Southeast side of the White House.

The Bidens have also announced they will add a cat to the White House menagerie. It was said to be a female and will join the Biden family in January. In the spring, the first lady said in an interview the cat was “waiting in the wings.” The cat has been fostered by acquaintances for the last several months.
