Jessica Simpson is revealing shocking secrets about her past in her new memoir Open Book.
The singer and fashion designer has opened up about the time she was sexually abused and how it led to a reliance on pills and alcohol.
In a recent interview with People, Jessica shared that she wanted to take the opportunity to be very transparent with fans.
“I didn’t feel comfortable talking about myself in a way that wasn’t honest,” she shares. “I’m a horrible liar.”
In the book, the mom-of-three shares the moment she was abused at only six-years-old.
“When I shared a bed with the daughter of a family friend,” she writes. “It would start with tickling my back and then go into things that were extremely uncomfortable…”
“I wanted to tell my parents. I was the victim but somehow I felt in the wrong.”
To mask the pain of her traumatic experience, Jessica began self-medicating with excessive amounts of alcohol and pills.
“I was killing myself with all the drinking and the pills,” she writes.
Jessica reveals that she hit rock bottom in 2017 after a Halloween party. She gathered her friends around her and admitted that she needed to make a change.
“When I finally said I needed help, it was like I was that little girl that found her calling in life again. I found direction and that was to walk straight ahead with no fear.”
The courageous mama has now been sober since November 2017. She says she found strength in her family and therapy.
She also opens up about her much-talked-about relationship with singer John Mayer in the new book.
The pair met in 2015 and quickly found themselves in an intense romance. “Again and again, he told me he was obsessed with me, sexually and emotionally,” she writes.
“He loved me in the way that he could and I loved that love for a very long time. Too long. And I went back and forth with it for a long time. But it did control me.”
Jessica hopes that sharing her story will help others who may be struggling.
“It’s been a long hard deep emotional journey. One that I’ve come through the other side with pure happiness and fulfillment and acceptance of myself. I’ve used my pain and turned it into something that can be beautiful and hopefully inspiring to people.”
